Ella Marchmill is a romantic, dreamy woman married to an unimaginative, down-to-earth husband. When her family is visiting a seaside town, she stays in the room vacated by a favorite poet. Ella memorizes his poetry, daydreams about the poet, and becomes emotionally involved in a romantic fantasy with this man she has never even met.

This excellent short story about marriage and unfulfilled dreams was first published in 1894 in the Pall Mall Magazine. I enjoyed reading it with "The Works of Thomas

I love Hardy. He isn't afraid to look at the hard parts of life, the ones full of angst and disappointment and unfulfilled dreams.
