I read Wicked before the Broadway show debuted. I've had a love of all things Wizard of Oz since before I can remember. I actually heard about this book on the internet somehow...possibly the friend of a friend's MySpace page? I can't remember for sure.
I rushed to good ole Barnes & Noble and dove in. The story was more complex than I imagined, and it took a good while to get into it. But I loved the little plot intricacies.

I did enjoy this different look at the Oz story. The exploration of the Wicked Witch of the West and how she came to be called "Wicked" was interesting. Parts of the book, including the parts with Turtle Heart were not my cup of tea. I thought parts of the book were choppy and it was hard to re-engage between sections. The characters were brought to life and I particularly liked the way the author portrayed Elphie, Boq, Nanny, and Nessarose. I will read Son of a Witch. I didn't like the way Wick

It literally took me 3 years to finish this book. I've started and stopped it countless times. I finally pushed through and finished it.
I think the book had a great story to be told - very clever and inventive. Its downfall is that it drags on so much - I found myself quickly losing interest in the wordy descriptions. The last quarter of the book was the best part by far, and even though I didn't love the book, I would probably try another book by the author. ...more
