Not a book you can put down for several weeks and then pick up, several names sound familliar and with the extended family and servants it's hard to keep track.

I struggled a lot keeping the names/relations straight. Characters would address each other by their relation to each other instead of by names such as "first wife" etc. To make matters worse, these addresses were in Chinese, as I recall. I did like the love story and the zen (or Taoist) fable as preface thing. Most of this novel I've forgotten. I'd like to try reading it again sometime and hope that I'm smarter now and can follow it a bit easier.
