"She went ahead of him through another door to put the cat down; while he had, owing to the unfamiliarity of this other, no less minute, hall, a renewal of difficulty over the old business of putting down his hat"

I'll be honest: I found this book strangely tedious and difficult to read. The plot, viewed in the abstract, is excellent and fascinating. But it's a character driven book (which I also usually like) in which none of the characters seems particularly understandable. I realize this is part of the point of the book - how little we can know about each other, etc. - but it was just too dry to keep my interest.
