It was my mother who first read me these words from Abraham Lincoln’s 1861 Inaugural address: The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.
There is no more beautiful description of what binds us together as Americans. It is my mother’s voice I still hear when I read these words today.
