But is she still a US citizen? If so, the book would still be eligible, right?

I have also read the Weatherford book; very well done.
But I have a request: if we must read picture books (which does make some sense after this year's winner....), perhaps you could group possible Newbery picture book picks later in the year, let's say October or November (or maybe make it our last reading selection?).
I really value this discussion group; it keeps me focused, with my limited time, on reading the best books of the year. Thank you!
To be honest I included the picture book based on the comments by Johnathon Hunt on the Heavy Medal blog. I also usually focus on the books released two months before. That way they are in the library and ready for reading.
