Jane Gosh, I'm disappointed this month. :( Neither selection is of interest to me; I've read POLDARK and don't feel like rereading. What has happened to ancient or medieval choices?

message 2: by Terri (last edited Jul 12, 2018 07:03PM) (new)

Terri Trying to cater to the tastes of nearly 5000 members, Jane. I can't please everyone every month. The time it takes to watch what people are reading and trying to find books to keep polls interesting every month still doesn't mean that I am going to appeal to every member who might join in a group read.

Only two polls ago we had two ancient choices. Before that mostly medieval with some ancient thrown in.
Current group is medieval. The read before that was ancient.

For nearly 7 years we have had a couple polls a year that were neither medieval or ancient.

A.R. Bredenberg I like the idea of reading Poldark. Never read these books, although I'm familiar with the stories from TV. Thanks for including this!

Terri You're welcome. I'm curious to know what the book was like. I've only seen bits of the tv series. Interesting to know where it all started.

message 5: by Jodi (new)

Jodi I’m a fan of the Poldark tv series. Haven’t read the books though.

message 6: by Nicky (new)

Nicky Moxey I think I'd like to read Poldark - it'd be interesting to see how close the series is.

message 7: by Jorge (new)

Jorge Williams A Bernard Cornwell novel I haven't read? Yes please!

message 8: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara Thanks, I do not have either and my TBR pile is enormous so I'll skip. Not long ago we visited Cornwall, including a lunch at Jamaica Inn and a look at some of the scenery for which Poldark is famous.

message 9: by Terri (new)

Terri Not a huge amount of hist fic set in Cornwall. Poor old Cornwall.

So we'll still have ancient or medieval novels, but just not all the time?
Terri, I do understand your difficulty in wanting to please folks.

message 12: by Terri (new)

Terri We never did do just ancient and medieval all the time though. We never have.
In the past you have even asked me to put a WWII era book in the poll, Jane, and I explained that while we do one poll a year that may include a late 1700s or very early 1800s I generally don't like going over 1800.

message 13: by Micaylah (new)

Micaylah So the focus of this Group is not entirely Medieval or Ancient? I'm new here and I wondered the same.

message 14: by Terri (last edited Jul 14, 2018 06:47PM) (new)

Terri Hi Micaylah,

Might be easier just to quote the first line of the Group Description on the Home page.

"The focus of this group is historical fiction set in Ancient and Medieval eras (with some post Medieval), in any geographical location."

Check out the main page of the group, then scroll down and you can see all the Era Folders that are open for discussions.

If you were looking for specifically an ancient or a medieval group read, last months group read was Blood Forest by Geraint Jones. Group Read threads are always open so feel free to jump in. This month's Group Read is Medieval The Poison Bed by E.C Fremantle. You are absolutely welcome to join in any discussions. :)

Kind regards,
Terri

Jorge Williams Cornwell . . .Cornwall . . .

message 16: by Terri (last edited Jul 15, 2018 01:11PM) (new)

Terri Lol. So someone noticed. We have a book set in Cornwall up against a book written by Cornwell.

Thank you for replying. 🙂

message 18: by Patricia (new)

Patricia I'm in the middle of reading Demelza, the second book in the Poldark series & I've owned a copy of Crowning Mercy forever (unread), so I'll be interested in following the discussions for either of these.

message 19: by Terri (new)

Terri Did you like Ross Poldark book 1, Patricia?

message 20: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Yes, I liked it though it was a little hard to get the tv version out of my head. I tend to see the characters as the ones on the set though they're not quite the same.

message 21: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Skea I'm in. It will be a re-read for me, but that's no problem - I remember loving it first time around - following the TV version of the late 70s.
