Phil I'm going for Dubliners as a) it's the only major Joyce work I've not read (including Finnegans Wake)and b) Gone with the Wind is too long for me right now.

message 2: by Alana (new)

Alana O my goodness, so many good choices! Hard to pick, even though I had already seconded one!

message 3: by Felixworks (new)

Felixworks Wow, I had never heard of Kristin Lavransdatter. Glad it was nominated, if only so I could discover it.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm going to cross my fingers & hope it's not Austen. I end up wanting to slap someone...

message 5: by Alana (new)

Alana I think I'll be excited no matter what wins. I'm just behind so I want to double up some. The two frontrunners right now are both great!

Danielle Felixworks wrote: "Wow, I had never heard of Kristin Lavransdatter. Glad it was nominated, if only so I could discover it."

I agree. I'll get to this one sometime.

message 7: by Phil (new)

Phil Jane Austen fans - your enthusiastic tripling up of nominations could be your downfall.

message 8: by Alana (new)

Alana We should do an author theme sometime so we just pick between different Austen books :)

message 9: by Phil (new)

Phil Or only allow one book per author (the one with most seconders / thirders etc, maybe). It's why Dickens lost out last year one time too.

message 10: by Phil (last edited Jan 18, 2013 03:58PM) (new)

Phil Wow - I've just noticed that Kirstin Lavransdatter is 1200 pages long too! What is it with you guys? lol

Would we just be reading volume one or the whole book?

NB: it sounds a great book though, and one I'd never heard of before, despite the Nobel prize.

message 11: by Alice (new)

Alice Doherty I've chosen Northanger Abbey because I really enjoyed Jayne Eyre. Already read Pride and Predjudice, which looks like it'll get the winning vote =( Looks like i'll have to wait till March, no worries x

message 12: by Kim N (last edited Jan 20, 2013 12:41PM) (new)

Kim N I chose Far From the Madding Crowd because it's on my TBR list.

The three front-runners are all excellent books, but I read Persuasion recently (twice!) and the other two more times than I can count.

Still reading The Brothers Karamazov, so I'll just continue on with that in Feb :)

Let's hope so, Phil... ;)

message 14: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I really like the idea of an author theme. I haven't started reading the Brother s Karamazov yet, so it looks like a Pride and Prejudice win will allow me some time to catch up with my reading. I only read that one a few months ago.

message 15: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Blackburn As much as I love Austen, I'm kind of ready to read something I haven't read already (I had read Anna Karenina, Scarlet Letter, and now Brothers K before reading them with the group). I'm voting Far From the Madding Crowd, because I bought the book recently and have been anxious to read it.

Kristin Lavransdatter looks interesting; I hadn't heard of that one before.

message 16: by Loretta (new)

Loretta McClellan There are so many great choices in this list!

I noticed that The Secret Garden isn't high up on the list. Maybe this has been done before (as I am new), but perhaps for a future Group Read a theme of classic "children's" literature might be voted on? Just a suggestion... Being a child at heart I can't help myself. ;)

message 17: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Loretta,

When I first joined the group a couple of months back there would be a children's classic side read every month. Then it was decided that people could just start their own side reads if a group of people wanted to read the same book but it didn't win the nomination. Maybe you can find people to join a side read with you. I just borrowed Watership Down from the library. So I know what you mean about liking children's classics.

Looks like Pride and Prejudice might win. Definitely a light read after what we've been reading.

message 19: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi Go Persuasion, Go!

message 20: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Even though my favorite Austen is Northanger and I think her *best* work is Emma, I still want to read P&P just for the anniversary. :)

message 21: by Lianne (new)

Lianne Since I'm new here, this may be a stupid question. Can members of the group do an alternative group read if they don't like the winner of the poll? For example, I would be up for reading any of the books on the poll list but P&P. Sorry, I just can't read it again right now. I can wait until March if that is what the rules require, but would like to read something now with a buddy or two.

message 22: by Phil (new)

Phil Wow - Persuasion is really haring up the back straight.

message 23: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi If I'm going to read Jane Austen, I want it to be one I haven't read. Keep voting for Persuasion!

message 24: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I guess everyone is keeping this poll suspenseful. What a dramatic turn around.

Lianne, what you could probably do is a side read. Post a comment on the side reads folder and see if you get any response. Check out the rules in the first post and then see if anyone else wants to read the book with you. Good luck!

message 26: by Phil (new)

Phil Wow - someone's switched sides at the last minute and P&P drops from 48 to 47 votes and into second place!

message 27: by Chahrazad (new)

Chahrazad I have to admit I'm enjoying the vote as much as the readings :D
