If Sherlock wins, what does everyone say about doing a "Summer of Sherlock" and we can read all of the Sherlock Holmes novels this summer?

message 3: by Angana (new)

Angana The Age of Innocence! Love the book, loved the film!

message 4: by Doreen (new)

Doreen Great idea, Jenn. I'd be in for a Summer of Sherlock. I've actually started reading the short stories (but keep getting distracted by other books). Next one to read for me are The Five Orange Pips. Think I might get through quicker with (a part of) the group :)

message 5: by Alana (new)

Alana Jenn, I am absolutely, all for that! I'd love to do them in published order and actually catch up on these stories that are alluded to all the time but I've never actually read. I'm finished with all the Jane Austen novels for the spring, so Sherlock Holmes for the summer/fall sounds excellent :)

message 6: by Marianthy (new)

Marianthy Karantzes Wharton is my favorite writer...would love to read it with all of you and see your thoughts!

Maybe we could still do the Sherlock novels as a side read project for the summer even if it doesn't win, which it is looking like it won't. After the poll I will start a discussion to see who would want to do this and how we want to do it. I definitely would enjoy this!

message 8: by Alana (new)

Alana I'm bound to read them all eventually regardless. And I DO want to read Age of Innocence, so I'm just as happy that's going to win.

message 9: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi I have the Complete Sherlock Holmes so will join in too!

I would love to read all the Sherlock Holmes novels, too.

Aprilleigh Even though it looks like The Illiad won't win this month's poll, I couldn't resist ordering the hardcover Fagles today. If anyone else is interested, I purchased it new for not much more than I would have paid for the quality paperback version pictured above (there's a cheaper paperback also) from an Amazon seller. The Odyssey and The Aeneid were also very competitively priced (hardcovers for less than retail for the quality paperback edition for both, by quite a bit for The Aeneid).

Do you have a link? I would love a really nice copy of all three!

For all three, click on "...new from $..." to get better prices - when I posted this all three were still available for about the same price I paid (about $55 including shipping for all three, brand-new in hardcover)

message 14: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I'd be in for the "Summer of Sherlock" too. Sounds fun as a side read if need be. I haven't read Age of Innocence either so looking forward to that as well. :-)

message 15: by Melissa (new)

Melissa My two favorites are in the lead! Age of Innocence and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - however I have not read A Study in Scarlet, so that is what I voted for...looks like I will have a lovely June no matter which of the three wins!

Vanessa Please let it be 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn', it's the only book I own and I'm desperate to read it haha :)

Ha ha!!! Maybe we can all club together to get you a copy of The Age of Innocence! Or you could try your local library ;-)

what if it was a subgroup so there could be two books at once the Sherlock and the another classic?

message 19: by Aprilleigh (last edited May 29, 2013 05:39PM) (new)

Aprilleigh I got mine from the library. I figure if I really love it I'll pick up a copy later.

message 20: by Alana (new)

Alana Helen I think that's what Jenn is talking about, doing a side read. Unless you're talking about an entire folder for the Sherlock Holmes stuff? Which I agree, is a good idea. A thread for each book, perhaps?
