Will anyone rSince I spend all my time reading the past few weeks reading this for class, and I read every word it gets to count for my yearly total. Will anyone read this tome if not assigned? No. This has a lot of essays in it, but sometimes oddly abridged ones. Like a random three page section of "Epistemology of the Closet." I'm a big fan of original texts, but I think people should be reading more complete versions. Still, I like social theory. /shrug. ...more

It's a set of three So I started reading this because I was going to Austin for spring break, and this is one of the quintessential Austin books. Ugh. It's a set of three political novellas all revolving around a Texas governor based on LBJ. First, the language and style of the book is very dated. Also nothing much seems to happen. Ostensibly it's about politics and politicians, but I think I've been ruined by Sorkin, because really it's just parties, sex and lots of drinking. Occasionally someone tries to bribe someone, but that's about it. Mostly through the first story, I hated this enough to want to give up, but I kept at it for some reason leaving this like an albatross around my neck. I finally made it through with the help of copious speed reading. Can't say that I would recommend. ...more

AAs someone who listened to more James Taylor and Simon and Garfunkel in high school than actually current music, I thought this was the book for me. And to be sure, I enjoyed those parts of the book more than CSNY / The Beatles melodramas. I like the Beatles, but I never with the obsessive following that some have. So most of this is a pretty dry history of concerts and stuff, I read the first 80 pages slowly and then blew through the rest of it. A solid, eh. It did make me want to listen to my James Taylor and Simon and Garfunkel though. I think I'll go do that now. ...more

Me reading books on feminism not being dead is a little like preaching to the choir. However, if you ever find yourself uttering or thinking thoughts like "post feminist world" or "I'm not a feminist", please read this book. Or tell friends to read this book. I love dogs, and I spend a fair amount of time around mine and other people's dogs and I learned a lot from this book. The first half of the book is dedicated to an understanding of the evolution of dogs, which sometimes gets a bit dull - but it plays into his larger point. Most of our common understandings of dogs, as mini-wolves, pack animals that need to assert their dominance is fundamentally flawed. This has major implications for the way people train, treat and understand their dogs. ...more

I sort of had it for a couple of days, reading only the first few pages, because once it started rolling this thing was like a freight train. I found myself wanting to experiment with reading and driving at the same time, or alternatively reading at stop signs and stop lights. (I didn't do any of these things, never fear, but this book made me think about it.)
I felt the same way about Into the Woods, but that ending was less effecting than this one was. Maybe that's just me. Especially toward the end I found myself so engrossed in the book that when I stopped reading I felt disoriented for a moment.
I just "liked" a couple of my favorite quotes on here, but there were a lot of them I really liked in the book.
I'm kind of soured that the third book will not be dealing with either Cassie or Rob, and who does that mean the fourth book is going to focus on...? But anyway, I really liked this one. Highly recommend. ...more

And I finally got around to reading it. Probably because it's not exactly the kind of book that makes you want to run right out and read depressing stories about Nazi's. However, this was really interesting. In part because it's not the typical Holocaust narrative, this isn't a story you've heard before, and it doesn't go where you thought it might. Either way, interesting. Glad I finally read it!...more
