I think I came in with the wrong expectations, this book just wasn't for me.

The story felt simple and straightforward as there weren't enough variables, detail or tension to keep me engaged and create any impact.
Characters Overall I didn’t love or hate any characters, they are quite simple. The only character that was really explored and I found somewhat interesting was Nichole as we learn about her traumatic past from her point of view and how it has affected her. Krystal, being the strong decisive sister, I did find her generic and unmemorable. We learn about Veronica and her mother through Nichole’s/Krystal’s point of view but there wasn’t enough detail about them to understand their character and behaviour and why they treated the sisters so poorly.
Outside of these 4 characters there was very little focus on the others and it was clear some were simply fillers. For example Whitney the school bully was so superficial and cliche. There was nothing memorable about the doctor, the detective or even Aiden! As Nichole’s husband and being involved in the fire I would’ve thought we’d learn more about him and his wealthy, powerful family but they were glossed over and so high level.
Plot and Progression It started off strong with the mystery around the fire where Nichole is in hospital due to a psychotic episode and Aiden suffering from severe burns in ICU. I was hooked at the start and I was expecting lots of evidence and reveals but it only went downhill from there and never recovered.
The first portion of the past to set the scene of the sister’s hard upbringing was essentially schoolyard bullying. Krystal and Nichole were always wary of what Veronica would do to them, but it wasn’t dark or sinister enough to create any suspense or build up to the first incident. It was just boring. Although all the incidents created some excitement and tension, they’re glossed over and resolved very quickly, including the twist. The events leading up to the twist fell flat and there aren't many variables which didn’t leave much room to guess and be surprised. For example there are only a few characters to focus on and there was so little evidence or findings from the actual night of the fire
Overall this is a quick and easy read that I would not recommend as details are light, characters are unmemorable and disappointing twists....more

I wasn’t blown away by the twist and wish there was more going on and more conflict. For example, from the blurb I thought that Jane was going to try and make something of herself so that she would fit in and feel like an equal to Bea. Instead she just ends up doing nothing and gossiping. Also, there was quite a lot of build up and mystery around Jane’s past - I was disappointed as to how easily that was resolved.
I was definitely not a fan of the ending whatsoever!!! Some things just didn’t make sense for example I was thinking why would this person do that or why would you think this? It was just so unsatisfying and the worst thing is the ending was meant to leave the reader thinking and hanging a little but there weren't enough hints or indications beforehand to make me think "oooh this will happen". Instead I was left thinking this ending is so anticlimactic, suspenseful and disappointing.
This book falls into the guilty pleasures category (like watching trashy tv) where you can just switch off because: the first 20% of the book was essentially about how much Jane hates rich people, the too fast and easy romance that develops between Jane and Eddie and boring fillers about Jane just hanging around with the beautification committee trying to fit in, though there were some hints/gossip around Bea, Balance and Eddie it didn’t add much to the mystery for me.
I wasn’t a fan of the format of the book, there were too many perspectives and jumping timelines. Normally I enjoy this format, like in Gone Girl, it was done so well and what made the twist even better.
Overall this was a quick, easy and enjoyable enough read. The pace was ok and there was just enough in each chapter to keep me interested though I wouldn’t say it was hard to put down. Even after the twists and reveals this book left me asking, “is that all?...more

I was expected to be on the edge of my seat, reading till late on a work night unable to put the book down. I wanted to know what events caused Nelly down her dark path and why would there be a 12 year old customer?! Sadly the book was a colossal disappointment.
Plot This book was quite simple in that all the sequence of events were straightforward and the key moments felt rushed as there wasn’t enough build up or details for me to get lost in the book. The dual timeline almost felt like a pointless filler as the current day in Caroline’s point of view was definitely the less exciting timeline. There weren't many new things to discover that you don’t already find out from the past timeline. It seemed quite unrealistic how easily Caroline discovered the secret apothecary that no one else had over so many years. She somehow formed an immediate deep connection with Nelly and Eliza’s story, causing her to hide some of her findings which didn’t make much sense to me and justify her actions. I was so curious as to why a 12 year old would request Nelly’s service, but learning about her side of the story was uneventful. I didn’t feel much excitement during the climax where the resolution and small twist had me asking, oh, is that all? Caroline’s predicament was straightforward and predictable, I never wondered how is she going to get out of this?! Although during the true climax with Nelly and Eliza I did wonder, it was resolved way too easily.
Characters I didn’t feel connected to any of the characters. I just didn’t feel the rollercoaster of emotions that I was expecting, I thought I would deep dive into complex characters where I would feel conflicted to root for. Nelly reminds me of Dexter, I really wanted to know what happened that led her to form such code/rules.Although it was tragic, it was glossed over quite quickly so I never felt I was fully invested or rooted for Nelly. Even when Nelly was forced to honour a request to dispense poison intended for a female, it was almost too easy to violate her rules. There’s not much to say about Caroline or Eliza, there wasn’t much to like or dislike about them as they were simple and straightforward.
This book had so much potential, but the delivery did not live up to expectations (in this case the blurb). Overall it was an ok read that was easy to put down and resume later....more
