A crucial and blood soaked account of the women fighters, women victims, and women martyrs of post-Soviet Chechnya and its violent history. The authorA crucial and blood soaked account of the women fighters, women victims, and women martyrs of post-Soviet Chechnya and its violent history. The author provides Islamic and regional stressors that make the life of a woman hard. It gives the brief stories and examples of those fighting the Russians as armed combatants, warriors, and even suicide bombers. It also emphasizes the familial, religious, and interpersonal stress these women must endure almost daily (whether voluntarily or involuntarily). Another really good book by Paul Murphy. Russia's Islamic Threat by Gordon Hahn and Wolves of Islam by Paul Murphy are great additions to anyone interested in this ordeal. Thanks....more

The book gives some demographic and statistical data on primarily the Caucasian region of southern Russia. The book goes into Chechnya, Dagestan, and Kabardino-Balkariya as individual chapters. The author gives explanations to jihad, Sharia, and the unique interpretations to Islam found in this region. The final chapter is dedicated to Tatarstan and the Tartars. It was a worthy read but is definitely a scholarly work. Thanks....more

It began with historical figures against Imperial Russia and goes into modern conflicts on the First and Second Chechen Wars. The author also ties Islamist-Jihadist connections to the Arab Middles East and the irreversible Islamicization of the northern Caucasus. This was a good book in my opinion. I recommend this and 'Wolves of Islam' by Paul Murphy to help you for your own opinion about this international issue. Thanks!...more

At times it can be a bit choppy and lacking fluidity, but the overall picture is great. Starts from the beginning and leads into the current conflict of the late 90s. Though dated it stills gives relevant information that is still present in this region. Check it out if you want a history of Chechnya on a deeper and wider scale. Thanks....more
