At the end of the year, thinking of how I want to spend my next year, it was a perfect time to read this book. I admire Murakami as an author � something I aspire to � and respect him as a runner, something I could never do. But I can certainly learn from his experience of running. The book is more about focus anyway, a skill useful in all aspects of life, and I think I took a few of his lessons. Turning 40 this year, with my own skills of youth deteriorating, and trying to figure out what path I should take as I age, I appreciate Murakami’s discussion of how his running has changed in 25 years. I also enjoyed his mentions of Hawaii, where I visited for the first time for my 40th birthday. This book is short and touching. The conversational tone makes you feel like you are sharing a drink with a middle-aged friend on a deck, watching the setting sun and discussing life. Perfect fare for the end of the year. ...more

Though the narrator is demonstrably unreliable (she documents countless times she exaggerates claims to others throughout the book, which over time makes you doubt every statement she makes), she is very engaging. The author did a great job narrating this book as well.
We have many of the same complaints raising our kids in "the West," and Amy Chua by no means has all (or any of?) the answers, but getting different perspectives from parents who want to push their kids towards excellence is valuable. What else in this genre should I read?...more
