I inhaled their book. The banter and verbal sparing definitely kept things entertaining, and that's what I want from a romance book - to be entertained.
The third-act break up was annoying to say the least, but it fortunately wasn’t as unforgivable as everyone made it seem. Honestly, people had me convinced Josh is the worst but he’s truly not.
Was he an ass for what he did and said? Absolutely. But he was lashing out from a place of hurt so I understand it to an extent.

Is this book highly original and inventive? No. It's a book marketed as romantasy. And no matter what any says, most romantasy is derivative. So, for me, it comes down to if mood and execution come together satisfyingly.
I'd say this one did. I like Kierse, and I am intrigued by Graves. They're just two individuals with major trust issues slowly falling for each other in a monster-filled world. I ate it up.
Now I can see if you went into this book hoping for excellent, detailed world-building, and strong fantasy elements you might be a bit disappointed. I don't need a lot of details or visual cues because I am one of those people who don't see a movie in my head when I read, so it doesn't bother me.
Bottom line, I had a good time reading this book and I can't wait for the sequel....more

This book was essentially repeated rounds of banter, tension and ‘What is happening?
There were some solid moments and I did quite enjoy the final scene, but the book itself never quite felt flushed out to me. I especially didn’t understand Willow’s motivation. Her dad royally sucked so I see no reason why she should be so committed seeing his life’s mission through.
Honestly, after the torture he put her through I would’ve buried him in dirt.
She was certainly capable of it. Luckily, the man got his karma.
Still, the way things unfolded at the end didn’t make any of sense and honestly felt convoluted. But I’ll probably see this series through because I preorder I can’t cancel....more

I've come to the realization that most romantasy is esssentially a fantasy book that can't stand on its own without the main romance. As in, if I took the 'romance' out of this book I'd be left with little more than vague threads of plot.
That being said, I enjoyed this book for the most part. It doesn't pretend to be some great fantasy epic. It essentially boils down to: girl who has been mistreated all her life agrees to marry a very handsome stranger who promises to help her find answer about her family. Dramatics ensue....more

This book had an interesting premise but was unfortunately dead on delivery.
The fantasy elements and world-building were lackluster, and the romance was highly predictable. As for the main characters, they both fell into typical archetypes. Kyan was a tall-dark, broody, thousand-year-old warrior with a chip on his shoulder. Nicole was an eighteen-nineteen-year-old first-year university student who was just so different that she caught the attention of the MMC who had never been interested in romance. She tries to fight her obvious attraction to him because he's the enemy. But she can't help feeling like despite her wariness and everything that tells her to stay away, he is someone she can trust. (view spoiler)[It was no surprise when they were revealed to be mates. (hide spoiler)]
In a sea of fantasy books, this does nothing to stand out. I had to check the synopsis to remind myself of the FMC name. This wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't just finished reading this book last night.

For an adult book the characters felt rather juvenile. I know Lore has lived a rather isolated life in her human village, but the girl truly lacks some basic self-preservation. Why would she share her secrets with a guard she barely knows? Why did she go into town for groceries knowing she was being hunted by royal guards? Use common sense sense please...more

The problem I had with this book is that despite being almost 500 pages, it was not enough of anything.
The plot was not strong enough to carry the book. The characters felt shallow and none of them were compelling, charming or charismatic enough to carry the book on their backs.
Lastly, while some might disagree, there wasn’t enough chemistry, spice or smut to help distract from the fact that the story was weak. Sometimes peak chemistry can act as a smokescreen so we don’t look too closely at the story itself ...more
