With him, I am forever a night-blooming flower, attracted and repelled by the heat of the sun.
This started a bit slow but wow that last 25% was amazing. Holly Black knows how to write. Her complex characters, their developments, her easy-to-read flowery writing, the angsty romances... I hope she never stops writing Fae books.
I was a bit hesitant to start this book since I love Jude and I didn't know what to expect from this duology but from the first page I absolutely loved Wren. Her soft heart was beautiful and her hunger for love teared me up constantly. I desperately need Bex to give Wren a big hug.
I am still not sure what to think of Oak since he is more complex than I realised but I am definitely invested in the romance.
“Fear is not love, but it can appear much the same.
Compared to the Folk of air trilogy, this was more urban fantasy and it was a quest story. We didn't have the court politics. It still feels like a Folk of air book but also not really since the structure of the book is very different and I loved that it had the same vibes but didn't feel like The Cruel Prince.
I don't want to give much away since everything was a surprise for me as well and I don't want to ruin it. If you enjoyed the original trilogy I think you will also love this one. I am so excited for the next book and so so so happy that this is a duology.
My greatest weakness has always been my desire for love. It is a yawning chasm within me, and the more that I reach for it, the more easily I am tricked. I am a walking bruise, an open sore. If Oak is masked, I am a face with all the skin ripped off. Over and over, I have told myself that I need to guard against my own yearnings, but that hasn't worked. I must try something new....more

#2: 4.5 stars This was soooo intense. I love our main characters and for such a short book even the side characters are so well written. These books are hard to read sometimes but thankfully, not too graphic. The main character is both loving and ruthless at the same time, and for a serial killer her relationship with Logan is adorable. Also, after that ending I HAVE TO read the next one. These books are so addicting and I'm loving it.
#3: 4 stars This felt more like a transition book but it was still so fast paced. I couldn't stop reading it. The flashbacks are a bit more graphic in this one but thankfully not too graphic that it triggered me. The ending was as always a cliff hanger and I have to read the next one right away.
#4: 4 stars That ending broke my heart. This one was the most graphic one yet. We learn nearly everything that happened "that night" and more. It was hard to read about.
#5: 4 stars It was too action packed at times (I personally don't care to read about gun fights) but it was still intense and the ending fit the overall story. This was a nearly perfect thriller for me. I love following villains/questionable main characters, thrillers that doesn't allow me to speculate (so I am actually surprised at the twists), and isn't too over the top. I loved that I didn't know what to think of certain characters throughout the book, like Zach or Fallon. This book had more info dumps than the first book so if you weren't into that, I should warn you. I normally find info dumps to be lazy writing but every information given to us is actually important to the storyline and not just meaningless trivia. Also I love El's way of explaining things the best.
El has been my favorite cranky, cynical, dark humored narrator since book one and she has grown so much in this book. We learn more about Orion as well and also their relationship is slow but so worth it. I absolutely love both of them so much. Together or apart.

I understand the low avarage rating for this since it's a slow paced, weird, hard to understand book but wow, this book was written for me. Crimson Peak inspired with magic and supernatural things? I should have known this would be a 5 star read for me. I don't even know how to write a proper review for this book. It is one of those books that looks straight forward at first but then turns into something else entirely and I need to think and possibly reread it to actually form any coherent thoughts on it.
In conclusion: I loved it.
(view spoiler)[Writing my thoughts about the ending here so I won't forget them. - The fact that Jane was actually Elodie's ghost and organized everything reminded me of Interstellar and I hate that movie. But for some reason I didn't mind it in this book. - I loved that Augustine died and the man we saw was actually Jane's better version of him. It was the best and only solution to "kill" the supernatural things. It was obvious from the start that Augustine was weak minded and wanted to be punished for what he did so Jane couldn't have changed him... except to kill him and then "remake" him. Such a great plot twist. - I am not sure why Elodie was a blank space when Jane saw Augustine's memories? Were they even his memories she was seeing? Did Augustine somehow capture Elodie's memory and literally erased her from the past? And since we didn't see Elodie's ghost where the hell is she? Or maybe she just died when Augustine couldn't complete his ritual properly? - I am also not sure what really happened to Jane at the end. I think that she died and somehow magic brought her back (hence the lights flickering at the end) but could she have done magic when she was a ghost?
I really need to think more on this before starting another book. (hide spoiler)]...more

The atmosphere was amazingly done, the intrigue was there, the vagueness of paranormal happenings were right up my alley. So why isn't this a 5 star book for me?
The ending was so abrupt. After all the built up I felt like I was pushed off a cliff after those last few pages. I want to say it didn't ruin the book for me but to be honest, it kind of did. The beginning was already weak but since I was very interested in the plot I pushed through and after the 100 page mark I was very much invested in the story. So I am very dissapointed that the ending was so badly executed. I didn't have a problem with what happened just how it was told to us.
Throughout the book, there were some very unrealistic scenes happening (view spoiler)[these people leave their 3 small children to a nanny they know literally nothing about. They let their toddlers run freely around the estate where there is a pond and a POISON GARDEN? Excuse me but what the hell was up with that poison garden??? Even if you are unable to get rid of the poison garden I think it would be the first thing to say to the new nanny instead of writing in a manuel's 125th page. (hide spoiler)]. I didn't mind them since the suspense was so well built. But the ending (view spoiler)[with that headache inducing childish writing (hide spoiler)] brought all the faults back to my mind.

I didn't think I would read a Naomi Novik book after reading Uprooted several years ago. Not because it was bad but I was just very underwhelmed by that very hyped book, and I thought her writing was not for me.
So when I heard about this book I wasn't that excited to read it. But since the plot sounded interesting I decided to give it a go. And well, it's safe to say after reading the first chapter I could not stop reading it. There are a lot of mixed reviews for this book and mostly because of the info dumping this book has. Which is actually a pet peeve of mine but whether because I knew there were info dumps going into it, or because I just wanted to learn everything about this world, I didn't mind it at all. It is such a fascinating world and the way our main character, El explains things didn't bother me at all. They are spread out every few pages for a few paragraphs so they take you out of the story a little but they are also very important for you to understand what is happening at the moment. Without the info dumps even the important things happening in the book wouldn't make sense to the reader.
The main reason why I loved this book was Galadriel aka El. You are either going to love or hate her cynical commentary throughout the book. She actually made me laugh out loud a few times. I also loved her relationships with the side characters especially Orion. I loved how El basically hated Orion because he was saving people (especially her) and mainly because he was righteous. (I understand El, I don't even like Captain America.) El and Orion are complete opposites of each other. El is considered to be evil and mean while Orion is your typical main character material hero. Until you learn more about him, that is. Shy heroes always get to me. And El being rude to anyone to protect Orion was top notch.
I really don't have any negative things to say about this except maybe we could have more action scenes but I feel like this was more of an intro to this world and series. I am looking forward to the next book.
P.s. A lot of people already talked about why and how they found some of the representation problematic in this book. Personally, I didn't find anything problematic but maybe because I'm not easily offended by the rep in fantasy books. If this was a contemporary book maybe some of the descriptions would have made me uncomfortable. But since this took place entirely in a new setting that had nothing to do with the characters' race or cultures, I did not find anything that bothered me. I honestly don't think any of the characters were made to look bad or good because of their race. I really liked this so you can either shun or unshun Naomi Novik yourself. I don't tend to read thriller mystery books often maybe because I love watching them but this one was so engaging from the first cWow. What a journey.
I don't tend to read thriller mystery books often maybe because I love watching them but this one was so engaging from the first chapter to the last. I love ghost stories and this was more of a modern ghost story where the main character's father wrote a nonfiction book about how they lived in a haunted house for 20 days. Written 25 years ago, this book shaped our main character, Maggie's life since it was such a hit and nearly everyone knew about the story. Maggie was 5 when all of this happened but she has no recollection of the events of the book occurring. She believes that she would remember such traumatic experiences. In the beginning of the book, Maggie inherits the "haunted house" and since she wants answers, she goes back to find the truth herself.
I did partially figure out the ending pretty early on but I was still so impressed, and surprised by the bits that I did not see coming. I loved that every chapter kept you guessing to what actually was happening and I also really enjoyed reading the Book her father wrote which was written like a typical ghost story. In contrast to Maggie's story which was more modern and written less cheesy, his father's book had a totally different tone to it. I loved how Riley Sager managed to change his writing for both story. It really felt like they were written by two different people.
As for the characters, I liked that none of the characters were really likeable. Even Ewan, who is a loving father wasn't perfect in any way. And even though I didn't really care for Maggie that much I wanted her to get out of this mess and live a somewhat normal life.
This is my first Riley Sager book but I'm looking forward to reading more of his work....more

This is a pretty polarizing book and I totally understand why. The hype does not help, either. The thing is if you haven't read JLA books when she first came out, you would not see the growth she had with this book. Her writing is so much better and her world building is more detailed. When she started to repeat her earlier works and writing, I have stopped reading her books (so about 4 years ago?) But she was one of my favourite authors for a long time. Her works usually feel very similar to other books or media but she somehow manages to make the story hers. Probably because she always knew how to write emotional, heartbreaking scenes. Even if you don't care about her characters she makes sure that you will feel for them, hurt for them when they are hurt.
So that being said, I was a little dissapointed when I was about 50% into this book. I thought it lacked the punch that all other JLA books had. The emotional scenes were there but more subdued, the romance was there but it was mediocre. But I was waiting for the plot twist because I knew where it was going from the beginning (it is pretty obvious.) Well, I thought to myself since I knew where it was going I wouldn't be affected by it, right? I wouldn't just start to root for these two characters since I didn't even understand what they felt toward eachother, let alone why they felt like that. Their connection was mediocre at best. But of course, I should have known not to underestimate JLA. She has broken my heart before (yes I'm looking at you, Opal and Deity) but that was years ago! I mean I was a teenager at the time. Surely, I have grown ???? RIGHT? Nope.
The switch we had at the last 25% made the book. Because it felt like there was a veil on OUR heads that made all of the emotions feel subdued and then it wasn't there anymore and all I could feel was heartbreak and hurt.
Were the characters annoying at times? Yes, definitely. But did I still root for them at the end? Yes. Because JLA made me feel all of these conflicting emotions and I just needed them to be happy after all those terrible memories.
The world building felt similar to The Immortal Rules, the main character felt a little like Rose from Vampire Academy, and I recognized some of the plot points that JLA used before but overall? When you finish the book and think about it as a whole, it just works. The 3 star book that I read turned into a 5 star one and I loved it. Some people also felt like it was similar to A Court of Thorns and Roses but after reading ACOTAR all I felt was disgust and frustration. After finishing this book, I feel a little emotinally drained but also so very excited. JLA is back, better than ever and I am very scared to read the second book.

(view spoiler)[Okay, just a little spoilery section for me to rant here. First off, I loved that this was a slow burn (some would argue) but I really felt like they were just attracted to each other throughout the whole book. Since Hawke wasn't real, it just made sense that she wouldn't fall in love with him because she literally did not know who he really was. And the way she decided to be with him (just doing it for her sake and not because she was in love) worked and I appreciated the fact that she didn't sleep with him because she was in love but because she didn't want the life she had and wanted to change. She trusted him, true but she wasn't in love with him.
Hawke's betrayal was obvious from the start. I did not expect werewolves though. I really was expecting Hawke to be a vampire. Come on, there was no mention of wolven how was I supposed to guess THAT. The real story behind the Ascended was also very sad but, I mean they were very clearly not the good guys from the start. So even though I wasn't shocked, the scenes were written amaaazingly. The hurt, the betrayal, all of it felt so real. I can't believe JLA can still play with my emotions like that but well, I guess the teenager in me still lives. That is not a good revelation for me. (hide spoiler)]...more

(a "spoilery" note: one of the characters attempts suicide by paracetamol overdose. Paracetamol toxicity is a sloooow and a painful death. It can even take weeks before your liver fails completely. In this case right after the character takes a bunch of paracetamol he has stomach pains which I guess happens because he regrets his decision. Because generally it would take about 10 hours before abdominal pains start. I have actually never heard someone trying to kill themselves by taking paracetamol but I found it odd that Alex Michaelides specifically tells the reader his character takes paracetamol. It felt more like he was trying to add something medical in his writing but it took me out of the story and didn't make sense.)
I loved the ending but the writing was very unpolished so I'm not sure how to rate this book. The characters were also meh. I get that the trend is "unlikeable characters" but I'm kind of sick of this trend especially when it comes to thrillers. When are we going to move on from Gone Girl?

I loved that Jude wasn't unaffected after she got kidnapped. She went down and that's when Cardan striked. Let's be honest here, he wouldn't be successful if he didn't act fast when she was down. She was literally mentally and physically drained. So it made sense how things turned out. I canNOT wait for Jude to come back up. She is definitely my favourite. I love Cardan as well. --- I can't believe I read this book after a month of its release. Like why? Why did I do it? Because everyone was reading and raving about this book? Probably. Also, I haven't read a good YA book in a long time so I had to try this one. I'm glad that I've read this but not so glad that I've read it so early that we don't even know when the next book comes out.
Even though I enjoyed reading this, I didn't think it was as amazing as everyone said it would be. It was a good first novel in a series but I think this was mostly a set up to the real story. Not a lot happened but it was mostly about getting to know the characters. It is a different YA fantasy book and I feel like this will change the tone of YA fantasy for a while. It was dark, intriguing and it wasn't cheesy at all.
The reason why this book is so raved about, I think, is because of the characters. There is literally no one who is "good" or "bad". You hate and love everyone at the same time and that's how the faeries SHOULD be. They must be wicked and bad but you also have to love them in order for them to charm you. So I thought the faeries were done so well. I really don't think you can't outdo Holly Black's faeries. They are horrible but even as a reader, you love them for some reason and can't even blame the humans for loving them.
The main character, Jude is the definition of a 17 year-old badass. All she wants is to be accepted into this faery world where she didn't even choose to come in the first place but after a while she realizes that acceptance isn't actually the real thing that she wants but it is power.
There were court games, mind games and power games in this entire book and they were done so well. You can see how Jude slowly changes and it's not always a good change. She did make mistakes but she learned from them and she was also unapologetic about them. I loved her as a main character. She is not exactly morally good or evil. Sometimes she is more evil than good sometimes vice versa.
The relationships between the characters were so complex and interesting to read about. Her relationship with her sisters, Madoc, Cardan and the other faeries were all very different from each other. They all felt complicated and real.
I can't exactly say Jude had a father-daughter relationship with Madoc but whatever they had was so different from anything I've read before. They loved each other but they were also calculating and self serving at the same time. I couldn't guess what either of them would do to get whatever they wanted.
I can't wait to read the next book in this new faery series. I'm sure it's going to be one of the key series in YA fantasy. Don't wait too long to read this one because it's going to be big....more

I am officially a fan of Julie Berry now. A few years ago I've read All the Truth That's in Me and I loved it. (Though I think I liked All The Truth That's in Me a tiny bit more)
First of all, I have to say that I don't read historical fiction often. When I read it, it's probably because I trust the author or the plot seems too interesting for me to pass up. I decided to give The Passion of Dolssa a chance because:
1) I loved Julie Berry's other book 2) I have never seen a YA book that took place in 13th century 3) It had amazing reviews on goodreads
I'm glad that I gave it a chance because even though it wasn't what I expected it to be (a lot of Christianity), I really enjoyed it!
Without even knowing I fell in love with the characters (well, except for Dolssa) I loved Botille so much. She was such a strong main character. She was smart, a good talker and an amazing observer. I'm so glad that pretty much the whole book was told from her perspective.
I thought Julie Berry done a great job with "small town" feels. I felt like I knew everyone and their problems at the end. The three sisters and their relationships were great to read about as well. And the romance. The romance was such a small part of the story but I loved it. It was slow and started off them being friends... well maybe not even friends. Though I have to warn you, this is definitely not a romance book. But a good romance is always a bonus for me.
For me, the best thing about this book was... I know you think I'm going to say "the friendship" but no. I really didn't care for Dolssa that much. (I'm a terrible person) It was actually the ending! THAT ENDING. At first I was confused but then I was like
[image]
If you are still confused about the ending, this is what I think about it: (view spoiler)[We know that at the end Botille was actually telling her story to a friar... who was accidentally sent by her sister, Sazia. (I'll never forgive her for that. HOW CAN SHE BE SO STUPID?!?!) So Botille tells her story to this friar but since she knows that her family is also in danger she changes her ending, telling him that Symo (my heart BROKE at that) and her son died. But at the last chapter, the POV from Fernando (the 11 year old kid), we see that he talks with an old woman and she tells him to go to her house and tell Bertran, her kid, "They're coming. Go quickly. I gave you an hour, at most. Take good care of Papa. Go with God."
I read this and I was like "THEY ARE ALIIIIVEEEEEEEE" but then sobered up and said "but she is GOING TO DIE OMG". I love that Julie Berry didn't just tell us what happened but expected us to figure it out. I LOVED that. Even though it is unclear what happens to any of them at the end, I loved the ending so much. I'm pretty sure Symo would never leave her behind but there is also the fact that he has their kid to protect. So I'm not sure what I believe what happens at the end yet. I'm just glad that they were happy when they had each other and their kid for a while. (hide spoiler)]

I thought Ruin and Rising was going to be the weakest instalment in the series. Imagine my surprise when this became my favourite book in the Grisha trilogy. It was action pact, funny, fast paced and so nerve wracking. It was amazing!
The character development of Alina was complete in this one and I looooved it. She was so badass and it was awesome.
Mal... ahhh Mal. We never got along with Mal throughout this trilogy. He annoyed me and if he met me I would probably annoy him, too. But while reading this I kind of made my peace with him. Alina wanted Mal and I wanted her to be happy. Well, I'm not happy about it but what can you do?
Nikolai is one of my favourite characters in this trilogy. He is born to be a leader. He is so clever, witty and snarky. Even though he was hurting a lot, he's never shown it. I just wanted to give him a big hug at the end of this. I also wouldn't mind taking that emerald ring. Emerald would look good on me.

"You were meant to be my balance, Alina. You are the only person in the world who might rule with me, who might keep my power in check."
I didn't hate the ending but I wasn't really satisfied with it, either. After all that character development I just wanted more for Alina. (view spoiler)[I wanted her to be with Nikolai and be a queen and fall in love with Nikolai slowly. But instead of that, Alina has become normal again. With Mal. (hide spoiler)]
I really enjoyed reading this trilogy and I'm actually really sad that it's over now. Will there ever be a book about the Darkling's past or something? I would love to read that.
Siege and Storm starts off really exciting. I was thrusted into this world and I loved how the beginning gripTHAT ENDING.

Wasn't expecting that.
Siege and Storm starts off really exciting. I was thrusted into this world and I loved how the beginning gripped you right away. The problem I had with this book though, was that the middle was so slooow. It dragged on and I just wanted the action to start. And when the action started, the book was over.

And the characters. Well not all of them just Mal and Vasily. They were so frustrating. I still can't understand why Alina loves Mal so much and I really can't see the chemistry between them. I think they hold each other back. But because Alina (for some reason) loves Mal, I want them to be together. I want Alina to be happy. Let the poor, lonely girl be happy. But Mal made me so mad in this. I hope I'll like him in Ruin and Rising. I'm trying. As for Vasily... He is just... He... He is an idiot. That's all. Even thinking about him makes me frustrated.
Other than these two frustrating characters, I really liked the side characters, Tamar and Tolye. THEY ARE AMAZING. I hope they'll appear even more in the last book. Also, Nikolai. He charms everyone how can I be immune to him?? I like Alina, too. She grows stronger in each book and she is clever. She is a kickass female character. How can I not like her?
I enjoy reading this trilogy and want to know what happens next but unfortunately I'm not loving it. I want to reread Six of Crows...more
Frozen Tides is definitely my favourite in the series so far! So many plot twists, soWhat just happened?

I don't really have anything non spoilery to say about this book. If you have read the book already you can read my spoilery section below and we can discuss it if you want!
(view spoiler)[First of all, I can't believe Lys died! I really thought she would be with Jonas after all of this drama. To be honest, I was really mad at Jonas and thought he didn't deserve Lys. He was still hitting on Cleo even after Lys told him she loved him and they kissed! But well, Jonas is already suffering for Lys' death so I'm shutting up now.
The whole Cleo-Magnus banter in this was SO. PAINFUL. Morgan Rhodes knows her readers, KNOWS WHAT WE WANT. She played with my heart so much. That part when Cleo said she fell in love with someone she wasn't supposed to and then said Theon's name... I was SO mad. But then she made that speech on the balcony saying Magnus deserved to be the king...... And then Chapter 31...

I can't believe King Gauis was in love with Cleo's mother, Elena back when they were teenagers. I hope Cleo's not his daughter though...... It can't be..... They were together when they were teenagers......
NO.
AND WHAT ABOUT THEON'S identical twin??? WHAT THE HELL?!?!? Can we just admit that Theon is dead and it's sad and MOVE ON? How many characters are going to want to avenge someone's death?? This series should've been called Avengers!
