I have no idea how to rate this book. None what so ever, so this review is just gonna be a long ramble of my jumbled thoughts.
First of all, the hero and heroine are separated for the entire length of this book. The ENTIRE book is dedicated to.... nothing. While events did occur to help the progression of their character development, I was struggling to see what the point of this book was supposed to be about. And now I have to wait until freaking August to find out what happens.
Second of all, this book has the hero and heroine separated for 6-7 years.
SIX TO SEVEN YEARS.
Why. Literally why. What was the point with all of this separation. The book starts off with "3 years later" but doesnt mention anything that happened in those 3 years. It caused a giant disconnect with the story because the reader is told the heroine just laid around her house in mourning and the hero just... disappears off the face of the earth... like... what the hell is going on?!
*huge spoiler* 7 years is a really long time for the heroine to pretend that shes dead while also trying to sabotage the hero's mafia business. I dont mind separation, but this just made me annoyed. In the middle of the book we get another "2 years later" in the chapter... again... WHAT THE FUCK. You cant just time jump for no fucking reason!?!? I get that sabotage takes time but COME ON. Nothing was making much sense.
There was a bunch of little things to be annoyed at too, like.. 1. too many characters to keep track of with long names that all just sounded exactly the same 2. convoluted business schemes that didnt make much sense in terms of story. One minute a character was saying somethign but then doing the opposite. It gave me whiplash. 3. No detail whatsoever on what happened in between time jumps.
I'm just annoyed. I'm not dissatisfied with the book, but merely just confused and annoyed. Why write such a long book thats only filler to just have it end on what everyone is waiting to read about anyway? Seems like a waste of time and energy to me.
Onto the reason why I gave it 3 stars instead of 1...
We are introduced to some really great secondary characters that would make great MC's for future books so im excited to see how that plays out. Theres alot of potential revenge and redemption character arcs we can potentially get and im looking forward to how all of their stories are intertwined. And alot of the new secondary characters helped make the heroine look like a total bad ass, which is always nice. She stepped up her game alot.
Also, the writing is spectacular. Its very inventive and has alot of moving parts. Not an easy thing to do and this author does it better than most. Like I said before, the hero and heroines character arcs have more depth than ever, and im on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happens. Its hard to hold my attention, and this long ass book of nothing did hold my attention for longer than I thought it would.
Another nice thing? Its not yet 100% confirmed, but im fairly confident that both Hero and Heroine stayed celibate for all of that separation. It was stated multiple times the hero could never be with anyone else because he still loved the heroine too much. And the heroine was too busy plotting revenge on the hero to be with anyone else.
This author has alot of loose ends to tie up and I hope she does it well. The hero still has alot to answer for.
Patiently waiting for the next one... hope all of this frustration is worth it in the end..

The hero left alot to be desired. At the 65% mark he was still in the state of mind of "im gonna leave her but, who knows, maybe ill come back to her? Still haven't made up my mind yet." He also repeated over and over and O V E R again how good the heroine smelled and he didnt know why he was so drawn to her. Bruh, can you write a character any more dense?!?...more

This was a wild ride on the angst train. Emotions flying all over the place with lots of tears (from the heroine, not me.) At first this started off as a solid 4 stars, as the story telling was surprisingly fresh for a MC romance. But after 60% I found myself willing the book to end early.
This book deals with extreme bullying, emotional abuse, and almost attempted suicide... and yet everything was surface level deep. All the characters were sort of ridiculous and over the top. For example, these grown ass motorcycle club men were getting involved in high school drama? Everything was soooo dramatic and exaggerated like a TBS drama. There were alot of scenes where someone from the MC club would go to talk to her and she would say "why are you still trying to ruin my life?!?" and then just break down and cry. Strong, she was not.
I didnt hate it and I read all the way until the end which is saying something these days. BUT the thing that really ruined the book was the slut shaming and the club whores. As if the author didnt even try to make these background characters human. They just slither in the background waiting to fuck something and cause drama.
Idk, im still very confused about this book.
Safety: -Heroine was a virgin- never went on a date, never been kissed -Hero wasnt a manwhore but had a reputation in high school. He was with other women when he was in the army while also having a correspondence with the heroine via handwritten letters. -OW drama in the form of one club whore. Here's the thing about Mia Sheridan books. This gal can write**spoiler alert** 2 underwhelmed stars.
First I'm going to start off with the positives.
Here's the thing about Mia Sheridan books. This gal can write. The dialogue flows naturally and evenly, not choppy or dumbed down. The characters talk like real people that are doing real actions. She at least puts some effort into researching the setting of her stories. She's written 20-some books so she's no freshmen to the genre. The writing was good so I think that at least deserves 2 stars.
So everythign sounds good, right? Wrong.
After 20-some books you think an author would have written something that wasnt so entirely fucking cliche. Like, every. single. romance. cliche. in. one. book. She took the "How to Write a Contemporary Romance for Dummies" guide and copy-pasted it.
So now lets go over everything I didnt like.
The Hero: King douche manwhore of New York comes down from his castle and assumes the h is a gold digger because.... he just thinks that way and we need a plot device that will get these two characters together. He's gotta be rich, experienced and successful because thats what we, women folk, find attractive in a man. And even better, he has to look down on all of the other conniving women hes ever been with because all they want is to be in a relationship with him *cries real tears of angst*
The heroine: Overall, she was a square. A saintly farm girl with a tragic past (obvi her past needs to be tragic so she can be uber vulnerable around the hero so he can be more of a man) that puts herself on ice so the hero can teach her things about sex that she never got with her one and only previous lover; her deceased husband. We of course could not have a heroine who actually loved someone before the hero, no, that wouldn't be allowed. Ex-husband had to be a cheating asshole that was also into crime so the hero actually seems like a decent guy.
Heroine has no depth besides a) tragic past and b) likes to ride horses.
The plot: > Boy and girl get off on the wrong foot. > Girl is clumsy and drops stuff around boy because reasons > Boy realizes that girl is perfect in every way once he gets his head out of his ass. Because she's not like all the manipulative sluts in New York. Girl releases she likes the boy too because "Oh my god he makes me realize that I have a vagina and stuff!" > sex without condoms >Internal back-and-forth monologues and angst ensure >Is it time for OW drama? Of course it is!!!! Lets bring all those sluts of New York back into the picture to make the heroine a martyr of purity. Lets remind the audience that the heroine is the perfect girl and she's of course better than them because she doesnt show off any skin. Oh the horror!! >The OW plot thickens! A step by step guide: 1. Heroine is left alone by hero so she goes to the bathroom 2. Heroine hears OW talk shit on her and about getting back together with the hero 3. Heroine walks in on OW giving a forced kiss to the hero. 4. Only 100% original content here folks. > surprise! Heroine is pregnant! See previous note about sex scenes, sans condoms >Now its time for the finale, which is of course the part of the story where the heroines past comes back to haunt her! My favorite! Her life is in danger? With a gun pointed at her head? Even better! And you'll never guess who the villain is! No, actually, you will 100% be able to guess who the villain is because its so dang obvious. >Epilogue with kids.

When the heroine is too much of a square to say penis and calls it "his thing"..... And she "doesnt know how to masturbate".............. and she had no idea that a woman could orgasm more than once.

Omg the writing was so bad it actually had me laughing at times. It reads like a first pass at a fan fiction. Author was trying way to hard for the heroine to have the same vibes as the woman on the cover.
When in reality I was picturing the heroine as this [image]
"In a very short period of time, I'd begun to realize something very important about myself. I wasnt like other people. No, not at all."
Its quotes like this that had me lol-ing all over the place because she was the most basic rich girl character ive ever read. Nothing was special about her, but she kept telling herself that she was the black sheep because she didnt do the 'normal teenage stuff' like dating and going to parties. Can authors stop doing this?!!? Why are 98% of heroine MC's written to be uncomfortable at parties or clubs?!? Cause they all have to be pure wall flowers for the H's attention?!
And now to Hero. Oh dear, this guy was toxic from the beginning. His 'over the top possessiveness' was not sexy or endearing. In the beggining he tells the heroine... "You really need to loosen up more, have some fun." Does that not ping any Brett Kavanugh vibes from anyone?!?! Thats what boys say when they try to get uncomfortable women into bed, only to then blame them for 'blue balls.'

The hero was a scumbag and a coward. The heroine was an annoying naive little cherub with flowers in her eyes. The plot and characters lacked passion and intrigue and id say the MC's only spent 30% of the book together. There was just so much other shit piled on top of an already annoying romance.
But you know what annoyed me the most? The fact that the hero was still rich somehow?! Because in the end, thats the only trait that really matters in a guy. Sure he can be scared, a recluse, and have the emotional maturity of a 5 year old BUT IF HE'S RICH THEN SIGN ME UPPPPPP.
