Dirty Deeds (Dirty Deeds, #1)

When am I going to learn to do some recon before diving into books simply because I have been reading several connected series of fav authors?
As in this case. Dirty Deeds #1 brings Mal & Cillian into focus but turns out to be a very short novella. (Pet Peeve: Why are books being promoted as novellas when they are not even that long?)
You know what I'm going to say next. This book ends abruptly and completely unexpectedly if you haven't searched reviews and become aware of this extremely irritating and all too common fact. Which I had not. Since it is a fav author & I am mid-series I didn't even check for page count before starting it.
Believe me, I am making serious changes in the way I select books from now on.
A major reason I find this annoying and intolerable: This multi-series series': Hell or High Water series; Men of a Honor series; and now Dirty Deeds series are exceptionally compelling, excellently written and executed. I have now read NINE in the overlapping series'.
Dirty Deeds #1 was the next in line. Books 2 and 3? They will be launched 9/15 and 12/15!
#1 stops at about a chapters' worth. A teaser actually. Book #1 came out 1/14. Why? If a book is not fully written & ready for publication WHY publish it in pieces? Why did I bother?
Her books are 5 stars all the way. But this book left me disappointed and shocked by the abrupt ending. How do you rate a book under such conditions?
