bookshelves: biology, general-science, neuroscience, favorites

This book is simply exquisite. Sapolsky is a fantastic scientist as well as a wonderful writer. In this book, he will help you understand the evolutionary purpose of the stress response and elucidate why we differ so much from other animals. We humans have a useful stress response but use it in very unuseful ways.

If you read this book, you will be treated to the wonderful and unexpected story of J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan. What does his life have to do with the neuroscience of stress? Read and find out! You will not be disappointed.

Nola I noticed this book is 560 pages long. That seems like a lot of pages for the topic. How does the author make the length worthwhile?

Charlene This edition is the 3rd and includes two more chapters, which is why it is longer than the 1993 version. I listened to this edition in audio version, which is 17 hours. Sapolsky fills that time with an incredible survey of the latest data available on stress and the human body, animal body, how it affects culture, the history of stress, its application in medicine, etc.

I once took a class only on stress and the endocrine system. If that course were put in an audio version, it would be longer and less interesting. No one can teach the neuroscience of stress like Sapolsky. Some of the studies he looks at are his own. he has spent his life researching this subject. The reader does not need any previous education in neuroscience. They simply have to have curiosity about it.

Sapolsky's has a gift for explaining complex science in a simple way. He is extremely relatable, passionate, and funny.

Nola Thank you, Charlene. I'm surprised I haven't heard of Robert M. Sapolsky before, but now I have requested the library purchase 2 of his audiobooks, and I will this to my list of books to read.

Charlene I hope you enjoy it!

Charlene This is one of the best lecture series of all time. It's Sapolsky's Intro to Human Behavioral Biology. I have watched the whole things at least 3 times.
