The Elusive Elixir (An Accidental Alchemist Mystery, #3)

This book follows directly from the previous one and I enjoyed this one more. The story is more straightforward and lacks all the flashbacks to historical days. Zoe does have some memories, but the action is pretty much all in the present. The story starts with Zoe in Paris investigating locations related to the backward alchemists who met at Notre Dame cathedral. While there she is recognized by a woman who knew her when she lived in Paris in the early 20th century. The woman accuses her of an act that she knew nothing of and doesn't seem to accept that she is her own granddaughter. Zoe is shocked when she gains new information and is frightened, rushing back home to the US. Upon her return she finds that her friend has become obsessed with finding the elixir of life, and his behavior is worrisome. There is also some other suspicious activity that culminates in the discovery of a dead body.
The sudden appearance of someone from Zoe's past throws her for a loop and she is shaken by the death, revelations from her visitor, and hints that someone has been going through her things. When someone she cares about goes missing, she has to act and uncovers several unsavory secrets along the way.
This book was much more direct, but I wished that Zoe wasn't so determined to ignore her own senses in preference for keeping her head down. While this book upends some of her beliefs and relationships, it ends on an upbeat note. She comes to understand the issues that underlie Dorian's freezing, and sees that she is having a positive effect on others.
I received a free digital copy for review. My comments are my own.
