When I read Fangirl, I didn't think Carry On sounded very similar to Harry Potter, but in Carry On, I definitely saw the resemblance. But the plot does deviate quite a bit from Harry Potter, and it is a different story. Carry On is humorous and adorable and exciting with some amazing characters. If for no other reason, you must read this book for Baz and Penelope. Simon himself was boring in comparison.
I loved the multiple points of view. I loved the blend of cheesy fluff and nail-biting mystery. The story took a while to really pick up, but when it did it was really enjoyable. I just wish it wasn't so easy for me to predict the end. I also think I might prefer Cath's fanfic (from Fangirl) to this story. Still, if you like a good young adult fantasy adventure, this is a book you don't want to miss.

I didn't enjoy the fanfic parts either initially, but I liked the scenes between Baz and Simon later on. This story is quite different though and it takes place later, in their final year. Obv there's no Cath and Levi in this book. But Simon and Baz are pretty cute too.
