did not like it

One of those books where the author tediously says next to nothing, and all the semi-litterati can't figure out what he's trying to say, so they conclude he must be brilliant. A wasted effort by an otherwise talented (so I hear) author, and that portion of the gullible public that assumes that something profound is being said so long as they can't understand it.

Pica Or it could be the other way around; people who don't "get it" scoff and rate it low. Yes, there were parts of this book that were very dense, but I enjoyed the plot immensely, and thought the outcome was perfect. I've read it twice, and it's possibly my favourite book of all time. Does that make me pretentious? Frankly, I don't care. I love this book, and I love that there's at least one author in the world who doesn't feel the need to dumb down to get popular approval.

Adam Good for you, Mary. Whether the book is really 'profound' or not is of secondary importance to whether you enjoy it or not.

Simone I kinda figured out what Eco was trying to say here, and I enjoyed it, AND thought it was brilliant. If it bores you, don't read it. It's not easy, I'll give you that. But don't go around saying it's bad only because it didn't catch your attention.

William No man, YOU missed the hidden gems. Sucks for you, semi-literati.

DesertSlug It seems to me you have confused the issue -- people like the book because they DO get it, you don't like the book because you don't get it. You might want to try Name of the Rose for an easier Eco read, or you might simply want to skip this author. But no need to criticize others for liking a book that you didn't understand.

Eole2000 Totally agree with Gerard's review.

Elromalero Aside from it's length (way too much information) the book is brilliant and it' s meaning quite obvious

Seth Jesus thank you for this. I knew I couldn't be the only one. I'm not just going to praise how great the book is on here because I'm afraid people will think I'm vapid and ignorant. I don't understand the book. I don't think anyone else understands the book. I think the book is deliberately obscure and that means the author has failed in making a real connection. Really reads like self-indulgent, pseudo intellectual flap doodle.

AL Gerard, you are spot on!

Kendalle Getty I’m baffled by your review. Are we really talking about the same book? Sure, you have to work for it—and as a result I have learned so much about Gnosticism, the Templars, the Rosacutians, the Kabbalah, syncretism, Brazilian culture those of us who read this not expecting The Babysitter’s Club enjoyed it because we’re not so vapid as to have to be fed stories the way chicks are fed by mama birds. No one’s pretending but you.
