really liked it

** spoiler alert ** Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. It took me awhile to get into it, but then it kept me engaged. In some ways this book reminds me of the main character in “My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent. It is similar in the overly verbose descriptions of nature (in my humble opinion). I found my self starting to skim through those parts because it was so wordy. Also similarly, the main character is abused, abandoned, and has to learn to make it on her own with few resources and while being very isolated in nature. One thing I found frustrating about the book is that Kya is “rescued by a man. Over and over again, her first love Tate saves her; teaching her to read, helping her get her books published so she can financially support herself, etc. I would have found the story more compelling if Tate hadn’t been so instrumental in all these ways. While in the end, Kya does make a significant choice on her own, by planning and orchestrating the murder of Chase, overall her development and growth is heavily credited to Tate. It also didn’t make sense to me that the attempted sexual assault is never addressed in the court trial.
