really liked it

I've had this book on my shelf for a long time and I finally got around to reading it. I didn't realize how long it's been published (this was written more than 15 years ago!) until 2/3 through the book, so Bryson's facts about endangered species, acid rain and the Park Service's desire to build a lot of roads might have improved or gotten worse since 1998. I'm also curious how much of the AT has changed since he wrote this book.

He's really funny in the beginning - I laughed out load while reading about how he stocked up for the trip - and then it seems he becomes more solemn, more serious. There's still poking fun at himself and others on the road but he seems to want to share the AT with those of us who will never hike it. I really like how in the end, he explains his mixed feelings.

I think anyone would like this book and I just want to go out now and read more Bryson!

Simone I haven't read this Bill Bryson book, but I've read some of his other books. I listened to an audio book of "Notes from a Small Island" (his book on England, which was awesome) and loved his book on road tripping around the US, "The Lost Continent" is similarly awesome and features a Carbondale cameo. Basically you should totally read more Bill Bryson books!
