I was ready to rate this 4 stars because the writing is great, but as I kept reading, the story lacked too much to retain my interest. The atmosphere is mysterious and spooky, but doesn’t have enough complexity to stand on its own. This felt like a half-formed idea the author pulled out of their back pocket due to the surface-level characters and extremely self-contained plot. After examining the writing for a while, I got the impression that it wasn’t edited as thoroughly as the author’s other books. It almost feels like the author was able to quickly pump this story out for publishing and get away with it because her writing is already solid and lyrical, but the story itself didn’t get much time to develop and marinate.

Thida Samay I agree with your sentiment. It certainly feels like, as of late, Schwab’s been writing for money—her writing style has degraded to a lot of repetition with clumsy prose and clumsier characterization. I wish that a little more time was spent on editing and betareaders were more critical, if there are any at all. I also found that though the atmosphere was lovely, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that it read much too like a previous book series: City of Ghosts.

Ipek Erdalli I loved The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue, but then I read Vicious and now I think Addie La Rue was a bit of a fluke for Schwab...

I'm intrigued I might have to pick myself a copy

Nicole Aka Grave doll Same I love the writing but had to go with a three too

Michelle DeFields-Gambrel Yes!! I’m a huge fan of Schwab’s writing, but what the heck was this?! So many holes in this story - how could her editors not have noticed?!

Vanessa (The Wolf & Her Books) Even though I gave it 4 stars, I noticed too many similarities from all her other books. The slytherin/hufflepuff dynamic that the author says she uses is very obvious: Delilah Bard and Kell, Addie LaRue and Henry, Olivia Prior and Matthew Prior. Also, Olivia Prior = Cassidy (City of Ghosts) = Sydney (Vengeful). I think a reason this was such a miss for so many is that the author's works are just so formulaic at this point.

Krista Totally agree!

rinny couldn’t agree more!👏🏻

Leah R I don’t even know why I suffered to get to the end of this book. I loved Addie LaRue but this was boring.

Nicole I’m about 60% done with this book and I don’t find myself with any desire to continue but I loved the beginning. Your review put my exact thoughts into words.

the judgy reader This book has made me wary of reading anything else by this author because it came too close to disappointing me.

Aiims2read This !!

Timeea Yup, couldn't say it better. It was a relaxing read but forgetable

Veronica Ross just started this yesterday and i’m about halfway through and had to come check reviews because i am so bored and needed to know if other people felt the same way.

Kelly Agreed, I really enjoyed the story concept but felt there was quite a bit missing

Allie Kallberg I agree, it felt somehow half-baked and more than a little tedious. Perhaps the setting and style simply weren't for me

Stephanie Stewart Agree. Disappointed that this felt rushed

Jayyyu Agree 💯

Karla Nunez Yesss agree, I read the version in spanish and I got the same feeling, I thought it was because of the translation but I guess not

Dakota Bri (brisbookbag) It’s middle grade…it’s supposed to be more simplistic for younger readers
