it was amazing

'You can't control the thoughts that arrive in your mind. The part you can control is what you do once they appear'.

A profound book from clinical Psychologist Dr Julie Smith. It provides phenomenal insight into how our minds work, and sound advice on managing our emotions and thoughts more effectively, particularly in response to challenges such as anxiety, stress, depression, low confidence, grief and more.

Through it's practical structure, it allows the reader to dip in and out, with bitesize chapters focusing on a specific topic or issue.

Ultimately, wellbeing comes from inward. We have much more power over our own emotions and thoughts than we think, therefore taking responsibility for our own wellbeing allows us to construct new emotional experiences and responses.

While initially a raw and intimidating task, confronting fears is crucial in helping us to understand our traumas and problems as opposed to neglecting and letting them fester.

Understanding that our emotions and thoughts are merely just initial guesses from our brains in reaction to a particular situation (and therefore only ONE possible perspective), permits us the time to reflect and manage our responses more effectively.

Smith provides an array of significantly beneficial techniques in understanding, regulating and observing our emotions as opposed to immediately reacting in negative ways, such as:

Metacognition - The act of thinking about our thoughts through awareness, being intentional and present, in addition to creating pauses between emotion and action.
Emotional Vocabulary - labelling our emotions (both positive and negative) for greater understanding and thus better regulation.
Self-soothing - Using our senses for positive association when we feel low.
Mindfulness - achieving a state of mind that prays attention to the present moment (a gym workout for the mind).
Physical Movement - And this doesn't have to be a large workout or activity. Simply springing into action and moving our bodies creates motivation, which is simply a by-product of action.

Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? is a wonderful handbook in striving towards peace of mind and managing the everyday effectually.
