An apt one line review; the breaking of fantasy conventions is what I like about it, but also like the way he focuses so much on the reality and characters being products of/and enthralled by the past way beyond most of his peers had ventured.

It's an attention to detail few people would bother with, frankly, and of which far fewer would be able to pull off half as well.
