it was ok
bookshelves: 2-stars, urban-fantasy

I liked the plot of this one, but I found the book on the whole to be an exhausting slog of mehness.

The main thing that is seared in to my brain is all the Atlanteans being surprised and disappointed in Grace when she buckles under the pressure of having to save the entire world dumped on her shoulders with less than a year of half-arsed training behind her (half-arsed on their part I may add. Most of the difficulties could have been completely avoided if anyone had bothered to explain anything or taught her to teleport ASAP).

When they weren't all being dicks it was Grace throwing a never ending pity party for herself. It was justifiable to some extent, but I have to say it's really boring to read page after page of someone having a mental breakdown. Sure, it's realistic and if I suddenly discovered I was born to be a superhero and save the world I'd probably be a wreck too, but unrelenting misery doesn't really make for a great reading experience unless you're into the whole sadist thing.

I also have absolutely no idea what was going on with Drew. Did he have a complete personality overhaul or something? I also don't get why Grace was quite so angry with him. I could understand some hurt that he didn't get around to coming clean sooner, but she took that and turned it way up to 11.

Much like the first book I think this one had some nice ideas and I do like the underlying premise, but it was just lacking a little something for me to really let go and let myself be immersed fully in the world.
