FL1: Team #1 ~ Another One Bites the Dust

Rating: 4.5 stars
Review: Prior to even starting the book, I commented on how Charley uses humor as a coping mechanism in even extremely serious moments, so the following quote from page 99 really jumped out at me when I came across it.
"She chuckled and I was glad I could help her sprinkle a little humor onto an otherwise horrific situation. It always helped me cope. Life was too short to be taken seriously."I think this sums up Charley's attitude quite well. As the Grim Reaper, Charley has had an intimate knowledge of death since the moment of her birth. Even when things are at their worst, she is quite willing to wield humor as a weapon. She can come across as irreverent ... well she is irreverent on the surface. But, when it comes right down to it, Charley can be counted on to fight for what she believes is right.
Charley has recovered physically from the traumatic events at the end of book 3 (view spoiler) , but hasn't been able to leave her apartment in the couple months since her release from the hospital. However, when a new client in desperate need of help comes to her, she doesn't let that stop her from doing the right thing. Between investigating leads, tracking down Reyes, confronting her father, fighting demons and solving a string of bank robberies, Charley begins to face her own problems and her strong personality quickly reasserts itself.
Definitely worth the read.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Just thought I'd let you know I checked the first book out from the library. I'm always on the lookout for paranormal mysteries.

Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews
Book Completed: 3/9/2013
Book Rating: ★★★★
Review:
This book was a great take with a little bit of everything when it comes to paranormal. I always like books with a different take on the paranormal and not just the normal vampire books or shifter books that follow the norm as far as what vampires and shifters "do" with their time and eating habits.
I actually really like Kate and her attitude on life. She is a great mix of sassy and sarcastic. I know that there are times I wish I could have more a take on life with that attitude. She is a great strong female character and her way of showing her abilities and need to kick some butt shows.
I would really like to see how her relationship with Curran grows especially with how much they infuriate one another.

I would probably say

I'll be reading

Just thought I'd let you know I checked the first book out from the library. I'm always on the lookout for parano..."
I hope you like it, Daffodil. The magical elements are stronger in the second book but both are great cozy mysteries.

Title by Author: Spellbinding by Maya Gold
Read: 3/10/13
Rating: ★★★☆
Review:
Spellbinding by Maya Gold was a quick and easy read that I think would be perfect for the younger-end of the YA readers spectrum. The story was simplistic but interesting, the characters just colorful enough, and the romance present but chaste. I imagine this book could become very popular with younger girls that are just beginning to venture into the reading world of YA fantasies.
Abby Silva just turned sixteen and is awkward and bit unpopular. She has a few close friends, but her secret crush, popular jock Travis Brown, has always seemed unattainable and she never feels like she fits in with her family members. Things change once Abby begins to research her family tree and finds familial ties originating during the Salem Witch Trials. Her ancestors were accused of being witches, but was that actually true? And has their power in the craft descended to Abby?
Abby was fairly withdrawn at the beginning of the book, but once she visited Salem and started thinking that she might be a witch, she really came into her own. She begins to be more confident in all aspects of her life and starts realizing that she needs to take charge of it if she wants to be happy. I liked seeing her character growth, especially in such a short novel, but I never felt a real connection to Abby and I had a hard time caring about the things that were happening to her. She wasn't an irritating protagonist by any means, she was just a little bland.
The two love interests in the stoy were complete opposites. Mr. Popular Travis Brown was unassuming and unthoughfully polite, but I never really understood why Abby liked him so much. He was dating a horrible girl but never seemed bothered by what she did to other people. Once Abby put the whammy on him, he became more of a puppy dog than an actual character and I was sad to see him used in that way. Rem was the other love interested and he was an older boy who lived and worked in Salem. He was a practioner like Abby but always ran so hot and cold she could never get a read on him. He acted like he was into her, but would then push her away. As annoying as the back and forth could become, I preferred Rem because he at least had some personality.
The story itself flowed well and the writing was in a nice, clean style but I found the plot to be too predictable for me. I could guess what was going to happen every step of the way. I also never connected with any of the characters, nor did I ever feel they were truly in danger. The whole story was missing an element of true tension for me. Those are the main reasons that I recommend this book for younger readers. I think they will be able to enjoy this storyline in a way that I, as an old jaded reader, just could not. Spellbinding was a cute way to pass a couple of hours, but I think that younger YA readers will be the ones most satisfied with this witchy tale.

So a little slow to start but after halfway through I couldn't put it down.
Zer is the leader of the fallen and they're all on the mission of finding the fallen's soulmates. Nessa is a genetic scientist and turns out her discovery leads to the soulmates. But Nessa herself is on the soulmate hitlist. Zer has to get to her first and have her bond with one of the fallen. There's no denying Zer and Nessa could be soulmates but Zer doesn't think he deserves a soulmate. I definitely preferred the first one but still the concept and world building is so unique and enjoyable.

This sisters are smart, sassy & sophisticated. They are aware of their capabilities and their weaknesses. The girls have different abilities: a witch, a were & a vamp. Each girl has a partner (or partners) that complement them. This time round the aleksais psychic network has teamed with a demon to create havoc. I found the ending was very rushed but overall a good read.

Review: I love how easy it is to slip right back into Eve & Roarke's world. It's always familiar, without being stale. Eve & Roarke's relationship has continued to grow throughout the series and because of that Eve has been able to face the ghosts of her abusive childhood.
The mystery in Calculated in Death was interesting to follow and the character interactions were laced with warmth and humor as always. Overall another keeper in the series.

This book was written extremely well. It was engaging and gave you everything you ever may have wanted to know about Mia. It is sad and inspiring and makes you feel grateful to live.
I absolutely loved Mia's family and friends. They are all outgoing, spontaneous, and tough-as-nails. It doesn't matter if it was her grandparents, parents, brother, boyfriend, or best friend. They were all very similar, yet slightly different and it made you fall in love with each and every one of them.
Mia's grandfather made me break down and cry in public when he had his one-on-one time with Mia. (view spoiler) ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

so this week we want: blue, yellow.....or white? LOL! my fingers are crossed for white too! :P

Meghan I think your library book is fine - there's no stipulation that I'm aware of in terms of genre just cover colour. Again check with Sandra in the Q&A if you want ;)
This week for me:

Jenne, yes that's OK.

I hope you like Spellbound, Belinda. Savannah wasn't my favorite narrator but the book was pretty good. I hope you have Thirteen ready to go because it has a wicked cliffhanger.

@ crystal - I see what you mean! I want to keep going!

This sees savannah powerless and trying to cope as a 'human' whilst doing a couple of investigating jobs with Adam. Halfway through she has a (helped) epiphany that she may just love Adam (um, duh!) and spend time trying to fix the relationship just when the action starts.Â

Everything concludes well in this final installment. It was terribly sad at parts and there were quite a few shocking developments. If you think Housemaster Vaughn was bad in previous books he takes the cake in this one. What a truly horribly evil man. I have so enjoyed this trilogy and am sad to see it end. I never expected to end up liking Cecily as much as I did in this one too.
