Ahh.. I found it because it was a finalist for the 1984 Book of the Year of Children's Book Council of Australia. It is Junk Castle by Robin Klein.
It was about a group of children who got together and built a huge cubby house out of garbage. I recall the cubby got pretty elaborate, taking design cues from castles.
Not much to go on I know - but hopefully someone will remember it as fondly as I do (and remember the critical element of its name!)
