This was an old book that was around our house when I was a child. Not a picture book, but did have a few pictures in it. It involved an old man, a ring, a little girl, and perhaps fairies? Our copy was hardcover, no dustjacket. Definitely published before 1950.

Just a chance this is The Magician's Nephew but it was published in 1955. There are pictures scattered throughout by Pauline Baines and the magician from the title is the elderly uncle of the hero, Digory, but the uncle is one of the book's villains. The little girl could be Polly and she and Digory are forced by the uncle to use rings to travel to several new worlds.
