Amy | 463 comments Ahhhh - already October! I was not prepared to post this month's reading list, but all set straight now.

Starting with my October book club book, Leaving Van Gogh (not really excited because I am not a fan of art but we'll see). Then finishing up Santa Cruz Booktopia books (so I can be there in spirit): Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, The Orphan Master's Son, Swim Back to Me, and South with the Sun. Will probably finish up the first of the audios/narrators, The Passage of Power: The Years of Lyndon B. Johnson, and start Bring Up the Bodies, but if Bring Up the Bodies is anything like Wolf Hall, it will probably take months as I have to replay everything I can't keep straight. The I will read the 10th oldest book on my TBR, Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire and the 10th oldest book physically on my book shelf, Caramelo. And...I'll have to read Emotional Intelligence for my MBA class. I anticipate a huge challenge fitting these all in this month, but I really hope I do because I REALLY want to get to The Casual Vacancy!!!

Leaving Van Gogh A Novel by Carol Wallace
Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend A Novel by Matthew Dicks The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson Swim Back to Me by Ann Packer South with the Sun Roald Amundsen, His Polar Explorations, and the Quest for Discovery by Lynne Cox
The Passage of Power (The Years of Lyndon Johnson #4 ) by Robert A. Caro Bring Up the Bodies (Wolf Hall, #2) by Hilary Mantel
Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire A Novel by Margot Berwin Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros
Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry
The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

message 9: by Valerie (last edited Oct 02, 2012 06:34AM) (new)

Valerie Just finished The Poisoner's Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York. Incredible book about science, politics, and murder in the 1920s. Couldn't put it down. I've now picked up The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks as a follow on read.

message 11: by Denise (new)

Denise Completed Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke and The Moneychangers by Arthur Hailey . Recieved my Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ First Reads copy of Albert of Adelaide by Howard L Anderson which I started last night. Next on the list is A Slave No More Two Men Who Escaped to Freedom, Including Their Own Narratives of Emancipation by David W. Blight . Then I' ll see where my whims will lead me.

message 12: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments Still pushing through The Pale Blue Eye, but I'm finding it a bit dull. I'm going to have to work hard to get it done by book club tomorrow night. I'm also paging through various things for Halloween- I've started Needful Things (but it is wicked long), Misery (much more do-able, length-wise), The Lottery and Other Stories, and I've started re-listening to Poe's Children: The New Horror: An Anthology.

Becky (beckymurr) | 557 comments Elizabeth wrote: "i started Tell The Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt last night."

I loved this book

·¡±ô¾±³ú²¹²ú±ð³Ù³ó☮ @ becky,

i'm not too far into it, but i have been swept away with june's character. and this is the same timeline of my own life, so i feel i am going to really identify with the pop culture references.

also, i did volunteer work with AIDS patients in my junior and senior year of high school, so that's hitting close to home too.

message 15: by Kats (new)

Kats (kats1) | 134 comments After a three week "reader's block" induced by the exceptionally dull book The Florist's Daughter (an utterly ghastly book club chore read), I think I am finally seeing light at the end of the "reading funk tunnel" by getting into A Fine Balance, a book I've owned for over 12 years and have been meaning to read all that time.
Well, this time the book club is doing me a favour, so bring it on. 125 pages in, and I am LOVING it so far.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

My first novel will be called "The Utterly Ghastly Book Club Chore Read". Thanks, Kats!

message 17: by Kats (new)

Kats (kats1) | 134 comments It will sell like sliced bread in my book club. Clearly.

Yes I was asking you-sorry :0
I really enjoyed the audio versions of these books. For some reason they helped me keep the storylines straight.

Vera (vvrcpa) | 68 comments I'm making my way through the books I picked up at Booktopia 2012 --- Just started The Great Northern Express! I am SO enjoying it. It makes me want to explore the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont!

Absolutely LOVED Cloud Atlas. Enjoy!

message 30: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckymurr) | 557 comments Just started The Dog Stars by Peter Heller

message 31: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (ohyeahthatgirl) | 24 comments I'm reading The Devil in Silver and am surprisingly having a hard time getting through it. I'm 100 pages in and I just keep getting pulled out of the story by the out-of-nowhere remarks about race. Like describing something rare as "as unlikely as a Korean marrying a black person" and several parenthetical statements describing why something may or may not be racist. It seems like it's not actually necessary to the development of the character and is just really clunky. Does the story get better after the first 100 pages?

message 32: by Kate (new)

Kate | 270 comments Balancing three books: The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen , Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter A Novel by Mario Vargas Llosa and Persuasion by Jane Austen . Put Mr. Toppit by Charles Elton onto the dnf pile. I read 94 pages and didn't want to read any further.

message 33: by Russell (new)

Russell | 37 comments I started October by finishing Light in August by William Faulkner for book club. And then moved into World War Z An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks . I also plan to read The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky , as I have heard a lot about it lately. I also want to pick up This Is How You Lose Her by Junot Díaz and NW by Zadie Smith . Lets hope I can get it all done.

message 34: by Juliette (new)

Juliette A Casual Vacancy appears to be the clear winner for many this month. I read Dora: A Headcase which turned out to be a page turner for me... not exactly sure why but fantastic character development is one factor. Now I'm finding myself with what Kats referred to as "readers block"

message 35: by Bobbi (last edited Oct 05, 2012 03:55AM) (new)

Bobbi | 153 comments I'll be seeing Mary Alice Monroe on October 14 at a "literary throwdown" on Daufuskie Island (the place where Pat Conroy taught school for a year and resulted in his writing The Water is Wide) so I've just reread The Beach House The Beach House and Beach House Memories Beach House Memories; enjoyed each one more than I did the first time, especially the sea turtle info!

I've just started the Art of Hearing Heartbeats on Ann's recommendation, and am liking it very much so far.

By the way, several more of my favorite authors will be at the Daufuskie event: Dorothea Benton Frank, Patti Callahan Henry, Sallie Ann Robinson, and Roger Pinckney, who will be launching his new novel, Blow the Man Down. It looks to be a fun-filled day, and the hour-long ferry ride in each direction just adds to the excitement! I'll post a recap afterwards . . .
