I'm halfway through this book and I've reached the point where Lucky finds the strange longpaws with black, empty faces, yellow coats and long, beeping sticks. Can anyone tell me what they are?? They sound really weird.... does the book reveal what they are later on? If not, does anyone have any idea what they are?

I figured they were people in HAZMAT suits and/or gas masks, and the beeping sticks were testing for radiation.

Those might be humans testing for radiation.
