Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage has been getting an average of 4 stars on goodreads. What did you think of it?

LauraW (lauralynnwalsh) | 115 comments I started it and didn't get all that far and then had to return it to the library. I reserved it again and it is now ready for pickup, so I will have a go at it again. More later, I hope.

Lou Hunley (goodreadscomlibrarianlou) | 3 comments I just wasn't getting anywhere with it. I often get distracted by other books I want to read. I thought it was funny at times but the plot just wasn't all that credible.

message 4: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 52 comments I didn't love it. thought is was kind of boring.

message 5: by Suzy (new)

Suzy (suzy_farmingdale) | 41 comments Boring? Ye Gods. It has a ton of plot, a ton of humor. I love love loved it. It will never win, though. Way too funny.

message 6: by Susie (new)

Susie (susiepurdue) | 34 comments Too hokey. I didn't find it charming at all. I kept thinking of Mayberry. Don't get me wrong: I loved Andy Griffith!

message 7: by Hilary (new)

Hilary (hilarylombardo) | 26 comments I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me, because I just didn't like this book! Based on what I'd heard about it, I really expected it to be more of a kid-sleuth type book, but there just wasn't much sleuthing done by the main character. I thought she'd be running around collecting clues and interviewing suspects, but there was none of that (at least that I remember). The parental figures just drove me nuts. They were so cartoonish - those silly wigs, I really thought they'd end up playing into the plot because who wears wigs all the time just for fun? I was so disappointed when they didn't. There were too many underdeveloped tertiary characters that would pop up and I would think who IS this person? Have we met them before? I was just underwhelmed by this book, unfortunately.

Peggy | 22 comments I loved it! My Book Club Kids (5th and 6th grade boys and girls) loved it too!

message 9: by Susie (new)

Susie (susiepurdue) | 34 comments I guess that it's the kids' opinions that matter in the end, anyway.

message 10: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey (librarybonanza) | 2 comments I thought the characters were well-developed and very solid. I enjoyed the tid bits of humor throughout (I loved that Dale was still wearing all black in memory of his namesake). Even more perfect when read with a Southern accent. I also appreciated that the friendship between Dale and Mo didn't blossom into love, or even mention love potentially existing. I can't begin to tell you how refreshing this is.

message 11: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cpassage) I am relieved to see the conflicting reactions. I, too, had very high hopes but simply couldn't warm up to the characters and found it altogether goofy. That said, if 5th and 6th graders loved it, that is really all that matters!

Melody | 33 comments My two boys and I are currently listening to this on CD's and we LOVE it. Every time we get in the car, my boys (ages 10 and 13) say, "put on Three Times Lucky mom"! And around the house, we call each other Colnel and Soldier. We already listened to The Mighty Miss Malone and Liar and Spy. So far we are 3 for 3 in terms of excellent choices.

message 13: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Wymer (tracyewymer) | 3 comments I felt the plot went in an unbelievable direction. I really enjoyed the voice for half the book, then I became distracted by all of the similes. Far too many. Quirky books are my faves, but this one fell short for me.

message 14: by Denise (new)

Denise | 6 comments I finished Three Times Lucky this morning. While I thought the plot, and twists and turns were alright, as an adult reader, I found myself pushing to get through it. I think it would hold the attention of a middle-grade reader much better.

I had trouble getting through this one. I did, however, love their fun loving way of speech. I think it was excellently written, it just didn't grab me.

Josephine Sorrell (jothebookgirl) | 272 comments i just finished Three Times Lucky in the car on the way home from the beach. I thought it dragged until the kidnaping, then I couldn't read fast enough

message 17: by Josephine (new)

Josephine Sorrell (jothebookgirl) | 272 comments the rest of my post. while I thought it was well written, I felt there was too much use of similes and metaphors. they became just wordy.

message 18: by Melody (new)

Melody | 33 comments We finished the audio of this book and we all thought it was funny, quirky and kept our attention. Although probably not a Newbery winner, it was good to listen to. The narrator did a wonderful job I might add too. The voices were very memorable!

message 19: by Cathy (new)

Cathy (cpassage) Have you announced the January read yet? Just want to get started while I have time...

Usually I don't post a January read. In the past I haven't started a book of the month until June, when more books have been published. If there is interest we could start earlier. In the meantime I like to keep the first couple months open so we can debate whether we approve of the Newbery committee's choices or not. Sometimes, as was the case with Moon Over Manifest, it's a book that hardly any of us had read, or even heard of.

message 21: by Melody (new)

Melody | 33 comments I suppose we could ask if any good books have been published in January yet. We can start our list for 2014.

message 22: by Carol (new)

Carol Royce Owen (cowen) | 20 comments I just picked up two Jan 2013 publications on my Kindle - Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool (I loved Moon Over Manifest) and Hokey Pokey by Jerry Spinelli. Haven't started either yet, both just looked interesting.

message 23: by Kim (new)

Kim McGee (kimsbookstack) | 76 comments I loved Moon over Manifest as well and you will love Navigating Early! Clare Vanderpool is so good at quirky characters. I also have Hokey Pokey waiting in the wings. Happy reading!

message 24: by Melody (new)

Melody | 33 comments I intend to read hokey pokey as well.
