If you start a book that turns out to be horrible do you keep reading or mark it as DNF (did not finish)?

It's a sickness. I must finish because it's impossible for me to not know how a story ends, no matter how bad it is. I can only think of one book I didn't finish. However, I have many painful reading experiences that I can recall.

I'll finish reading it eventually. I will put it off to the side and read something else for a bit, but I will eventually finish the darned book no matter how bad it is. Jonetta, I agree. It is a sickness.

Yeah, Jaret and Jonetta are right! I might put it off for a while, but I have to finish it. It doesn't matter if the book keeps us or not, I think that we need to know the end of every story we've started. All characters deserve an ending!

I will do the same except if I don't even care how it will end then I will abandon ship. I just started abandoning ship as there are better reads out there.

Half my brain knows that is true. The other half still hasn't gotten the memo. Unfortunately the second half of my brain controls my reading library it seems.

I'm with you - there are some that just don't "catch" my attention enough to trudge thru - some are even very popular books - but ehhh to me. and I have SO DAMN MANY other books that I could enjoy instead.

It depends on how much time I have invested in the book. If I feel it is already a lot then I keep going because I'm determined to finish. But if I find it so bad fairly soon I am happy to abandon. The Poe Shadow is a good example - just could not bring myself to finish!

It takes a truly BAD book for me to give it up without finishing. I even finished the book version of "Forrest Gump" which in my opinion must be one of the worst books ever written. Who ever wrote the screen play for the movie worked a miracle.

Some books I put aside and then pick up later but I always finish them hoping that they will get better, then I get angry at myself for wasting time on crap. Now and then though a book has a terrible start and I'm glad I stuck with it.

I used to be a compulsive book finisher, but recently, I've been allowing myself to give up if the book just isn't working for me. I've noticed that it's easier to give up on the book if it's just boring me, but if there's some crazy/annoying plot device sometimes I just can't stop reading because I have to know how the author wraps up the craziness she's created.

If I just can't get into a book, I generally "finish" it by skimming, just to see what happened.

I always finish the book, no matter what. I feel I cannot have a real impression of the whole story if I'm not through with it.
And many times stories have a last twist at the end... I just have to finish all the book

I've recently started giving up on books. I have a busy life, why waste my precious reading time on a book I'm just not feeling? And so I don't. Some books are put to the side for another chance (and get put back onto the TBR shelf), while others are purged from my shelves and mind. And surprisingly, I don't feel an ounce of guilt about it. But there are too many good books out there to make myself suffer through a not so good or terrible one.

I usually finish it. Sometimes though I just skim through if it's really that bad. Once in awhile one comes along that I just can't waste my time with, but that is really rare.

I almost always finish... if I buy the book I'll finish no matter what, but if I've only downloaded the sample chapter (since I read pretty much everything off my kindle now) and I cant get into it then I won't buy it and thus don't finish it.

I mark it as DNF. Life is too short to read a bad book. :)

i havent DNF yet but i can see that happening. i think the longer u read, the more discriminate u become. plus w/sooo many books out there, why keep reading a book u arent liking??

Yes! If I don't like it from the get-go. I used to force myself to finish a book I didn't like just to finish it and admittedly I still do but I'm more receptive to putting something in the DNF pile.

One of these days I'll learn to give up on a book. I was reading one this week that I was hating and came really close to giving up on it. Wouldn't you know the book turned around and when I reached the end, I was ready for the next book in the series.

This doesn't happen all the time but it's what keeps me from giving up on a book. *sigh*

I hear ya, Jonetta. I'm in the same boat, girl. We need to learn to bail water together.

I feel that way about my current read. Gravesend Light by David Payne. Im just not that into it but i feel i should continue the read since the reviews are decent on goodreads. I hate to give up and write off the time i have spent reading the book so far.

I just STOPPED reading a book for the first time in my life! I'm the same way with a TV program... I HAVE to see the end - even if it's bad ( thank heavens for DVR's!)
but... this book was D/s males and I just can't ....

I have no problem with m/m - it can be so sexy!
but the Dom/slave 24/7 was wierd to me. I cannot imagine being that Dominant nor that submissive.

I NEED to be one of the characters and I'm NOT male or gay or into slave-ing... so I felt like a voyeur and couldn't enjoy it.

I use to finish bad books, but now I usually have such a selection of books that I will think I am going to finish it and I don't. I want to read the book and tell myself I will. Since my books always come from the library first (if I really like then I will buy it) By the time I get ready to finish the book it is due back at the library. I know I can renew the book, but then I think why. I have all these other books. I usually pick up about 4-9 books a week.
