Maggie Anton | 199 comments Now through August 18 [one week only], my publisher is doing a 10-book giveaway for my new historical novel Enchantress: A Novel of Rav Hisda's Daughter. Here's the link /giveaway/sh...

Fantastic tales of demons and the Evil Eye, magical incantations, and powerful attractions abound in Enchantress, a novel that weaves together Talmudic lore, ancient Jewish magic, and a timeless love story set in fourth-century Babylonia.

One of the most powerful practitioner of these mysterious arts is Rav Hisda’s daughter, whose innate awareness allows her to possess the arcane skills men lack. With her husband, Rava--whose knowledge of the secret Torah enables him to create a “man out of earth and to resurrect another rabbi from death--the two brave an evil sorceress, Ashmedai the Demon King, and even the Angel of Death in their quest to safeguard their people, even while putting their romance at risk.

The author of the acclaimed Rashi’s Daughters series and the award-winning Apprentice: A Novel of Love, the Talmud, and Sorcery has conjured literary magic in the land where “abracadabra originated. Based on five years of research and populated with characters from the Talmud, Enchantress brings a pivotal era of Jewish and Christian history to life from the perspective of a courageous and passionate woman.

You make a great point, Bryn, whether it's addressed to me or not. I'm editing my posts to reflect that it's US only for now. I hope to do another in the near future that includes the UK. I appreciate the feedback.

Tom Williams | 112 comments 'The White Rajah' is currently free on iBooks.

It's the story of James Brooke, the 19th century adventurer who found himself ruler of part of Borneo. I'd tell you more about it, but it's free, so why not look for yourself. Or check out my blog:

message 116: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 35 comments It sounds fascinating but looks like it's only on the Apple or ibook versions. What about those of us with Kindle? Do you know of any applications that will convert to Kindle?

message 117: by Tom (new)

Tom Williams | 112 comments I hope it will be given away on Kindle, but it doesn't always happen.

If you read on an iPad or similar, you just install the iBooks app (free) and it works just like a Kindle.

Or there's always the paperback ;) (Not free, I'm afraid.)

message 118: by Tom (new)

Tom Williams | 112 comments I'm delighted to be able to tell you that 'The White Rajah' is now free on Kindle as well as iBooks. It should be free until the end of the month, but why not download it now? You can always read it later.

Tom Williams | 112 comments I can only see the UK price. $5.69 seems quite expensive. It's usually less than £2 in the UK.

message 121: by Tom (new)

message 123: by Tom (new)

Martine Bailey (martineanne) | 29 comments An Appetite for Violets A Novel by Martine Bailey
Dunne Books have 25 advance reading copies of An Appetite for Violets: A Novel to give away to residents of Canada and the United States.
With only three months to wait for hardback and e-book release in January 2015, An Appetite for Violets: A Novel takes readers on a food lover’s journey across eighteenth century Europe.
According to New York Times Bestselling author, Karen Harper:
‘An Appetite for Violets is a feast of unique characters, suspense, passion and delicious storytelling. Martine Bailey has served up a beautifully rendered, haunting tale told by an unforgettable heroine. A novel to devour yet savor.
Seasoned with authentic recipes from the Georgian era, we see how ordinary cooks practiced their craft and how extraordinary confectioners created masterpieces of sugarwork.
Novelist Fay Weldon has credited Martine with creating a new genre, Culinary Gothic:
'Martine Bailey writes with such easy, compelling grace, and in a fascinating new genre best described as Culinary Gothic. I was hooked and enraptured.'
The US edition will be published in beautiful hardback on 13 January 2015, comprising 35 chapters headed by historic recipes, a Map of Europe in the 1770s and two tradecard illustrations.

Tom Williams | 112 comments The second in my series of books about James Burke, a British spy in the Napoleonic wars, has just come out on Kindle. The paperback will follow shortly.

'Burke and the Bedouin' is an old-fashioned adventure yarn set around Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt in 1798. There is an evil villain, a beautiful damsel in distress, midnight rides across the desert, and desperate fights with kidnappers and assorted evil-doers. And while Burke is doing all this, there's the little matter of trying to stop Napoleon from leading an army across the desert to India. It's yet another of those amazing military adventures you've probably never heard of.

To celebrate the arrival of Burke's second adventure, Amazon are giving copies away on Kindle from now until Sunday. Grab one while you can. According to my computer, this offer is available in the US as well as the UK.

message 147: by Tom (new)

Tom Williams | 112 comments A huge French army DID gather but not on the Channel coast. It sailed from the Mediterranean coast. It invaded Egypt where you can read contemporary accounts of the Bedouin attacking the landing, exactly as described in my novel. I have actually written that the Bedouin and the Mamelukes hated each other and would not cooperate to resist the invasion, much along the lines that you suggest, although Paul Strathern's book, 'Napoleon in Egypt'says that the Bedouin fought alongside the Mamelukes at the Battle of the Pyramids.

I am always worried that I will get historical details wrong but, given that I consulted contemporary accounts as well as modern histories (and had a look at the exhibition about this campaign at Les Invalides in Paris), it seems unlikely that I have imagined the whole thing. Of course contemporary accounts are not always reliable and historians sometimes write books that are wrong and the French are notoriously unreliable when it comes to accounts oftheir own history, so perhaps it never happened.
