I' just bought it. I prefer to buy books I'm planning to review so they'll show up as a verified purchase and I don't have to say I got a free copy in exchange for the review (makes the review look ugly, and now that I'm thinking about it, I need to go back and add this for a few reviews for books I was gifted.).

This brings up a question I've had. Do people really pay attention if it doesn't say "verified purchase"? Because it doesn't always mean the book was gifted either. I've sold a fair amount of books at local events. Just wondering.

My TBR Shelf runneth over! I need a vacation, to devote solely to reading.

ML, I think it matters more to other authors, who for whatever reason decide the reviews are unfair, than to readers, who as you say, are unlikely to be analyzing each and every review. This is what I'm doing because at the moment, there are certain other authors who are calling my reviews (given and received) into question and are supposedly launching an investigation. Part of me wants to put up a few fake reviews on my own book to really give them something to "investigate" but, no, I won't bother. It's not worth the hassle.

Besides, it's not like the old days of bookstores and blurb reading. If I'm interested enough to read a review I'm interested enough to get a free sample and read that.
If I get to the end of a sample then it's page count I look at next. Because page count = time. The longer the page count the more likely I am to look at reviews.
And then it's not the five and fours I look at. It's the well reasoned three star reviews, and if the page count is, say, 500 pages (just finished one; loved it) I'll check out some well reasoned two stars.
Why? Because I'm weird like that.

Can't wait to read the rest...as soon as I get through my daunting TBR list :) Just keep chuggin' away!

I think Amazon only has that rule to be in compliance wit FCC guidelines. It he only people who really care are the vindictive authors who want to get reviews taken away from others. Most consumer readers are not going to sit there and read each and every review, nor do they really care who did the review or how they got the book.
Since I currently have at least two authors who for whatever reason are so danged obsessed with my reviews (the ones I give and the ones I receive) that they are launching an "investigation" to prove my "dishonesty," I'm making it a delegation berate point to follow the rules to a T. I agree that having to put "I received a free copy..." Anywhere in the review ruins it (it's such an eyesore to me), and for that reason, I generally prefer to buy books I'm planning to review so they'll show up as verified purchases. Most authors don't charge that much.

Jamie, just so you know, you have inspired my latest stroke of semi-genius (translate: hare-brained scheme LOL). Look under the newly-created "Fun and Games discussion)

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!! I have thoroughly enjoyed catching up on this discussion! So that's why you started that Weird Al book parody event! HAHAHAHAA!!
I read reviews. I ignore the low star ones unless they are overwhelming the majority. I read all of the rest, except for once. Once all the five star reviews were completely vapid, so I ignored them, assuming they were there to bump the rating.
I did not end up reading that book because of the reviews.

I don't read a lot of reviews up front when I pick a book, but I do find myself reading through more of others' reviews for books I have reviewed myself.

I know, I'm cheating with these - I'll see what I can get read by the end of the month!
Here are mine so far:

Ryan, I can't remember the last time a book made me laugh out loud , and pretty sure I snorted a couple times as well. Thank you for that. And KK, I have book 2 and looking forward to reading it.
