Rachael (rachael_cochlin) | 8 comments What did you read this week? Little Women

Did you enjoy the book? Still reading, but enjoying so far.

When was your book published? 1868 originally.

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not? Yes, but only because of the language used.

message 4: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) I read Jane Eyre for this week, which was published in 1847. I haven't read a book with such an elevated language for a long time and it made me very happy. Except for the language used, I didn't really feel it was an old book. I was afraid it would be boring and slow but it wasn't and I absolutely loved it.

Erica | 214 comments What did you read this week? Far from the Madding Crowd

Did you enjoy the book?

Yes. It took me awhile to get into it because of the overly descriptive language at the beginning, but I really enjoyed the story.

When was your book published?

1874

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not?

Yes, because of the language used (the slang of the workers and the flowery language of the narrative especially).

Joann What did you read this week? Secret Garden

Did you enjoy the book? yes

When was your book published? 1911

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not?
Surprisingly, not that much

What did you read this week? The Phantom of the Opera

Did you enjoy the book? Nop, too much melodrama.

When was your book published? 1909

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not? Yes a little, the sentences were a little too stuffed with adjectives sometimes and there were some old fashioned phrasing. The characterization was more the one expected in a play than in a novel, I don't know if it was done in purpose or if it's an old way to write the characters.

message 8: by Keri (new)

Keri What did you read this week?
A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Did you enjoy the book? Yes it was somewhat different from the movie I have seen so that made it even more interesting!

When was your book published? 1905

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not? No I didn't feel like it was that old.

Sarah | 186 comments What did you read this week? The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Did you enjoy the book? Yes I did. I am very glad that I finally read this book.

When was your book published? 1911

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not? Only during some parts. Some of the language reminded me that this book was old.

Jean Cole (joc724) | 115 comments What did you read this week? Candide

Did you enjoy the book? Yes

When was your book published? 1759

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not?
Yes definitely. It's a satire that pokes fun at nobility and the church.

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) What did you read this week?

Hunger by Knut Hamsun

Did you enjoy the book?

Yes, it was better than I expected.

When was your book published?

1890

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not?

I was surprised at how current this book seemed. It was about homelessness and poverty and amazingly relevant to those issues today.

What did you read this week?

Emma

Did you enjoy the book?

Yes, I'm only about 2/3 of the way through but finding it pretty funny.

When was your book published?

Originally in 1816!

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not?

Yes--the language and mannerisms of characters are very different than modern times.

Christi (christibooks) What did you read this week?
The Picture of Dorian Gray

Did you enjoy the book?
No, I did not enjoy this book.

When was your book published?
1891

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not?
I did feel it was an old book. The writing was overly flowery and descriptive and focused on things that did not advance the plot. The characters just sat around. No one does anything except go to the theatre or dinner.

The Princess and the Goblin

Did you enjoy the book?
Yes

When was your book published?
1872

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not?
A few times yes, but it also had a timeless fairytale feel, which may be why it felt "old."

Megan (megan_morris) | 170 comments What did you read this week?

Journey to the Center of the Earth

Did you enjoy the book?

It was ok, not quite what I expected but I probably won't read it again.

When was your book published?

1864

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not?

Yes and no. A lot of the descriptions and the way they spoke seemed pretty modern. In fact I had to go back and double check that this book qualified for this section. However, it's all male cast stands as a glaringly obvious beacon to the past.

This is one of my kids favourite movies!! I didn't realise it was based on a book written in the 1800s.

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments What did you read this week? Frankenstein

Did you enjoy the book? LOVED it. It's a new all-time favourite. Absolutely brilliant, and to think Mary Shelley started it at 19 is mind-blowing. The character of the monster is so beautifully written, and this book truly moved me. Totally unexpected.

When was your book published? 1818, so almost two hundred years ago.

While reading, did you feel it was an old book or not? It did, but mostly in the descriptions of Switzerland - like how the gates to the city of Geneva were closed after 10pm. But it wasn't dry & stodgy at all.
