Abby What are your thoughts on Sense and Sensibility, and its multiple movie adaptations? Are you more Elinor or Marianne? What do you think of Colonel Brandon and Mr. Whilloughby? Here's the place to discuss!:)

QNPoohBear | 103 comments I'm Elinor all the way, but when I first read the book I was around the age of Marianne so naturally I related more to her. I'm the big sister so I sympathize with Elinor and all she has to put up with. Col. Brandon is the second most dull of all Austen heroes (Edmund Bertram is the most dull) yet he's so wonderful and chivalrous. I especially love Alan Rickman (in anything) as Col. Brandon. Willoughby is such a cad. He's worse than Wickham because he's calculating. He knows what he's doing whereas Wickham is lazy and gets caught up in circumstances. The one character I can't stand though is Edward Ferrars. I know he can't do much about his situation but he's so weak and he could have at least told Elinor his secret.

Obviously my favorite adaptation is the Emma Thompson version. Her screenplay is beautiful and true to the novel (though it cuts out some parts). Ang Lee's direction is gorgeous and the movie introduced Kate Winslet to the world. She was marvelous as Marianne. I love little Margaret and how she gets a voice.

I also quite liked the 2008 BBC/PBS version. Dan Stevens is way too good looking to be Edward, let alone a clergyman. The unmarried ladies of the congregation would be on him like leeches!

IMDB lists a 1981 BBC adaptation which I've never seen. (I really must remember to check the subscription library and see if they still have videos).

Sense and Sensibility (1950) (TV Episode)
- The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse (1948) (TV Series)

Scents and Sensibility (2011) modern adaptation
From Prada to Nada (2011) modern Latina version not really worth watching if you're an ardent Janeite but OK for a modern story.

Anyone know anything about this? Sense & Sensibility (2014) Sisters, Elinor and Marianne, and their chances for love and happiness threatened by Elinor's stoic sense and Marianne's passionate sensibility.

Director: Desiree Naomi Stone
Writers: Jane Austen, Desiree Naomi Stone
Stars: Zoe Bates, Cathan Bordyn, Gunner Brent

I liked your review a lot! It was very insightful and amusing! I just watched the '95 S and S last night, and I was reminded of the beautiful story and characters. Since I can't really decide who I relate to more, (although I admire Elinor a whole lot), I decide that I am most like Margaret! I really like her, and I think it would be splendid if there was a book just about her life and how she grows up. Hey, maybe I'll try to write a book for her myself! ;)

Rats, I thought I had a good original idea! Oh well. :) Thank you for the list of S and S spin-offs!

QNPoohBear | 103 comments 1995 Emma Thompson version was on Ovation (cable channel) this evening. It's so lovely I can watch it over and over again. It's too bad Emma Thompson looked way too old to be Elinor but she's such a great actress her age can be overlooked.
