As for me, I am still struggling.

message 4: by D.B. (new)

D.B. Jones (goodreadscomdbjones-author) | 1 comments Book 1 = 5 months plus editing another month
Book 2 = 6 months. "
Book 3 = 4 months. "
Book 4 = 3 months "
Book 5= 3 months "
Book 6 = 4 months "
Book 7 = WIP
Book 8 = WIP
That being said, I took a break between each book. But I have worked on two books at the same time, but in different genres.

Thats fast, incredible. That gives me hope! :)

message 6: by Marie (new)

Marie (naturechild02) Depends on the type of book. I've written the first draft of one in a matter of weeks before and then another took 4 years. Editing a final draft also varies. I have an unpublished right now that I finally finished edits on after 7 years. Another only took a few months.

message 7: by C.B. (new)

C.B. Cook (cbcook) Mine varies. My only published book took me only a couple months, but then it sat and gathered dust for a couple years. ;)

That's both funny and sad. But at last you got the job done!

message 9: by C.B. (new)

C.B. Cook (cbcook) Yep! :)

message 10: by Angela (new)

Angela Colsin (acolsin) | 10 comments My first book took several years, maybe 3 at the most, but that's really only because I took a very long break from writing it when I still had no solid plans to publish. Once I got on the ball though, it took 6-7 months to finish.

My second book took about 10 months, and my third took 9 :D

Whoa thats fast! Im currently writing one and some days it feels useless. I still try to drag myself and complete it.

Jill O’Bones (jill_h_obones) | 4 comments Which book, lol.

The one I just published it took me 6 years. I wrote the first draft, then went on to another story, and another, before I re-wrote it for NaNo 2013.

My first book I published in 2013, and that one was a two-year project, the second, which was the second of that series I published a few months later, and the third early the next year. My fourth was released last year.

Stephanie Cress | 6 comments Is it ever really finished? Even once it's published? I don't feel like mine is. But that's a cop-out isn't it?

My first novel, Gilded Shadows, started out as my NaNoWriMo novel in 2007. I got my 50k words that November but it took until January to get that horrific rough draft done, so...three months.

Then, years of editing (my own & a professional), and in 2010 I started shipping it around. In 2012 I pitched it at the Las Vegas Writers Conference (an event I highly recommend) and the second publisher I queried there, said they wanted to give me a chance.

After some rewrites on my part and some restructuring of their company (one of their CEO's left around that time), it's finally hitting the shelves this summer.

So...from conception to bookstore...took about 7 and a half to 8 years.

Second novel rough draft I did get done in the same amount of time as the first (it was started in the 2009 NaNo) but I hated the ending. So I worked my way back from it to see where it went wrong & where I should start rewriting & in the end, decided to completely rewrite it using scenes from the old one when I could. It's still a work in progress...

Angel | 6 comments My first book took over 20 years because I started writing it when I was 13, a poetry book. But, my next book, a novel is taking me three years so far to get it to where I want it to be ready for publication. Once I publish it, I'm done with it. I don't back paddle.

The challenges of writing

message 16: by sucre'd fiend (new)

sucre'd fiend (sucredfiend) | 3 comments To actually write the first draft, it took me about thirty days. It was part of NaNoWriMo, and I finished ahead of time. Editing it added a couple months because I couldn't dedicate as much time.

message 17: by K.P. (new)

K.P. Merriweather (kp_merriweather) | 4 comments first book took 18 years (edits life travel and 3 major rewrites though not counting how many times i had to recover data due to bad hard drives or stuff getting stolen...) it's holding up okay

message 18: by sucre'd fiend (new)

sucre'd fiend (sucredfiend) | 3 comments Whoa, that's a long time.

Wow makes me dread how much my book will take

message 20: by David (new)

David Kummer It took me about six months to write and edit my novel, and then three months to do the same for my novella.

message 21: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeljsullivan) | 7 comments My FIRST book! That was 29 books ago. But as I recall it took about six months.

Beem Weeks | 2 comments My first novel, Jazz Baby, with all the re-writes and a two year break, took nearly eight years to finish. But then again, I wasn't in a hurry.

message 23: by David (new)

David Kummer Wow. That's a lot of work/time to put into a book.
