One of the things that I always challenge myself with is to as many of the books on the YALSA Best Fiction lists every year. Does someone else want to accept my challenge?

message 2: by Kim (new)

Kim (kadykayf) I think that would be fun. Are you talking about the Best of the Best?

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

I try to read as many from the entire list but best or top ten would probably be best.

The top ten for this years award are:
Me and Earl and the dying girl Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews
The Diviners The Diviners (The Diviners, #1) by Libba Bray
Seraphina Seraphina (Seraphina, #1) by Rachel Hartman
Enchanted Enchanted (Woodcutter Sisters #1) by Alethea Kontis
Every Day Every Day by David Levithan
Never Fall Down Never Fall Down by Patricia McCormick
Boy 21
Aristotal and Dante...... Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
Raven Boys The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater
Code name verity Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

I read The Diviners The Diviners (The Diviners, #1) by Libba Bray not too long ago and absolutely loved it. Still getting creeped out thinking about it though.

message 7: by Kim (new)

Kim (kadykayf) I loved The Diviners too. I'll play along. The Top Ten are easy enough :)

Love, love, love The Raven Boys. It's in my top 10 picks from last year. I'm a YA librarian, so I'm thinking I would read them anyway (I've already read half), but it is fun to make it a real challenge. I'm challenging myself to read all of the top ten graphic novels too.

I read The Ravens and really liked it too, not as much as The Diviners though.

Finished Never Fall Down....wow...going to have nightmares.....scary because you know it has and could happen again ( maybe is already happening) . Definitely HS only

message 13: by Kelly (new)

Kelly RAley (kraley) | 101 comments I'm in too. I have a lot on my TBR list too. I love goals!

message 14: by Beverly (new)

Beverly | 31 comments Highly recommend Diviners and Code Name Verity for women and YA girls. Superb literary quality. Many surprises in both. Never Fall Down needs to be on everyone's must read list. Me Earl and the Dying Girl highly entertaining for older, more mature YA and adults. Excited to finish the list.

I finished Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Will not be getting this for my HS library as I want to keep my job in my very conservative area of the woods. And to be frank, it just wasn't my cup of tea either. It seemed like it was trying to hard to be too shocking/over the top that the story was lost.

Kim (kadykayf) Brenda wrote: "I finished Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Will not be getting this for my HS library as I want to keep my job in my very conservative area of the woods. And to be frank, it just wasn't my cup of..."

Without giving anything away, what exactly did they do to be shocking? Sexually explicit? Drugs? I haven't purchased it yet.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Language and sexual content. Read the first chapter and you will get what I mean.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished reading Seraphina. I really enjoyed it and can see why it is on this list. Lots of dragons, adventure, and the ever present love triangle thrown in to match. I did like the fantastical world the author created.

*one small note, there is a lot of talk about mating between the species, what it means to be a bast... so if you are thinking about 6th grade or lower, please read first before you decide.

message 19: by Julia (new)

Julia | 432 comments The torture and rough interrogations in Code Name Verity really got to me. I get it, it needed to be there, but it was difficult to read.

I must be the only person in the world who wasn't blown away by Seraphina. I was mostly bored actually. The dragon-lore was interesting, but I never really connected with the story or the characters.

Kim - there is nothing wrong with that. There have been books that I didn't like that others raved about. Made me feel like maybe I was missing something. Then realized that everyone has different opinions and thoughts and we should embrace them.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay....I did it again. I didn't realize that I had already read a book until after I checked it out and started to read it. The book is called Enchanted by Kontis.

One of the things that I have started to do was keep a book blog so not only can I share my thoughts about what I read with my students but also so I can remember the books and my original thoughts myself. So....I looked at my book blog and I had given it 4 out of 5 stars way back when.

Now I remember the book and I do remember that it was slow to start but once the frog is transformed, it becomes a very gripping story that girls who like romance with a little something extra will devour.
