Bunny suggested a movie folder..maybe we can just chat here and see how that goes without creating sub-topics with specific names of movies.

I will start by saying that I want to see "Sunshine Cleaning"

I adore Amy Adams. I rarely go to the movies, so guess I will have to wait for this one on DVD.

A friend just gave me about 12 DVDs - the entire series of a British show "As Time Goes By" which sounds delightful. And I have the whole series of "Enemy at the Door" to watch too. It is a drama series about the Nazi occupation of the Channel Islands during the Second World War. I was inspired to buy it because I loved the Guernsey book.

Bunny | 254 comments We watched "The Visitor" last night which was just as good as the reviews said it was. The night before we watched "The Things We lost in the Fire" with Halle Berry, David Duchovny and Benicio Del Toro, a story of a widow who takes in her husband's best friend who is a heroin addict. Lovely movie. We watched another one, too, oh, what was it - "Silk" a movie set somewhere in Europe in the 18th century about a man sent to Japan to buy silk worms for the village's mills - Kiera Knightly and Albert Molina, among others, and beautifully photographed.

"Sunshine Cleaning" is high on my list - but I want "Enemy at the Gates" - guess I'll have to buy it, too. If you haven't seen "As Time Goes By", you are in for a treat. I think we know that series by heart.

JoAnn/QuAppelle Kirk | 1608 comments Mod
Bunny, the movie about the Channel Islands in WW 2 is "Enemy at the Door" (not "Gates"). I have to Google it every time I talk about it!

madrano | 444 comments Bunny, we liked THE VISITOR, too, Did you see the film which earned Melissa Leo her Oscar nomination, FROZEN RIVER? We really liked that.

I've not seen "As Time Goes By" in sequence but have enjoyed what we've seen. The bits i've seen of "Enemy at the Door" didn't grab my interest, so i passed. I think there will come a time when the topic grabs me, but i'm not there yet.

I would watch ANYTHING with Benicio Del Toro. : ) I really enjoyed The Things We Lost In The Fire.

Nancy/Hrdcovers watched and loved "Frozen River" last week. I am something like #77 on the waiting list at the library. Once I get relocated to the beach, I will have to see if my video store carries it.

Bunny | 254 comments Frozen River is on my list and On Demand for this weekend - looking forward to it. I watched Rescue Dawn last night because I used to date Dieter Dengler a long time ago, so I felt I should watch it. He was such a bad boy - he stole a bracelet for me for Christmas which I wouldn't take. He was so proud of himself, too. I remember seeing his picture on the cover of Time and thinking that he would be the one to do that. Anyway - the movie was pretty graphic with the torture in the first scenes, so I came back in the middle. It was a good movie, very intense and hard to believe people can live through that kind of thing. Christian Bale's not as cute as Dieter was though :)

JoAnn/QuAppelle Kirk | 1608 comments Mod
Bunny, interesting about Dieter Dengler. Did he survive?

My SIL did survival training for two weeks in the Maine woods in January. These guys are taught to survive awful conditions and torture.

I never look at ON DEMAND because it usually has such awful movies but I see "Frozen River" on the list. Who woulda thunk? I had a two-shot espresso at 6 -should be able to stay awake and watch it!

Reeves Honey | 142 comments I went to the movies about 2 weeks ago to see The Reader. The movie was better than the book. Kate Winslet deserved the Oscar and I did not think the movie was sympathetic toward her character just the boy/man she had the affair with was.
Last Sunday my hubby made me watch Twilight. He has very pediestrian taste so I humored him. It was not that bad! I have been catching up on my DVR'd stuff this past week..Little Dorrit,Foyles War on PBS Mystery and The #1 ladies Detective Agency so no time for other movies and such!

Bunny | 254 comments We're in a movie watching mode, so last night we saw "The Freshman" with Matthew Broderick and Marlon Brando On Demand. I love this movie, and it was a treat to see it again. It's one of those innocent person gets pulled into a situation he doesn't understand, and thing go from bad to worse in a completely amusing way. Great lines.

Then we got to "Frozen River", which was riviting from scene one. No wonder Leo was nominated for an Academy Award for this one, she has such an expressive face. I'd love to look like her, age and all (as I'm much older than she is, I'd look better, wouldn't I? :) Very suspensful and completely satisfactory. And so cold up there on the New York - Canadian border.

Sherry (sethurner) (sthurner) That Matthew Broderick movie was shot on the UW Madison campus. It made quite a splash at the time. We were in Madison this weekend for the Wisconsin Film Festival. I'll probably blog about it later, but right now I'm feeling like my eyes and my backside are too tired to go on.

I liked Rescue Dawn too, and the Werner Herzog documentary, Little Deiter Wants to Fly. Dengler was a fascinating man.

message 15: by madrano (new)

madrano | 444 comments Werner Herzog! We have been cursed by his movies. Are we just selecting the worst of what he's made or are we just not Herzog people? We watched Fitzcarraldo-- This weekend we watched Stroszek--

DH has sworn to never watch another of his films as a result. LOL!

deborah, who is tickled to see others enjoyed Frozen River as much as she did

Sherry (sethurner) (sthurner) LOL, we just rewatched Stroszek at the film festival on Saturday. I really wish I knew what compelled Herzog, who often sets his films in far-flung places like Peru or the antarctic, to film in northern Wisconsin. While much of the grim, gray images are realistic, we do NOT have feuding farmers on tractors with shotguns. We do have crummy winter weather, forlorn villages with trailer parks and ski lifts. I'm not sure about dancing chickens...

Deborah, you might like White Diamond or Encounters at the End of the World better.

Bunny | 254 comments Which movie was it that documented making "Fitzcarraldo"? "Heart of Darkness"? Something like that. I loved that documentary, horrifying as it was. Herzog is (was) crazy. (Is he still alive?)

Lovely countryside in The Freshman. Don't know if they filmed that around UW but if they did, it was so nice.

Sherry (sethurner) (sthurner) Bunny wrote: "Which movie was it that documented making "Fitzcarraldo"? "Heart of Darkness"? Something like that. I loved that documentary, horrifying as it was. Herzog is (was) crazy. (Is he still alive?) ..."
I think you are thinking about My Best Fiend, which is a documentary about Herzog's relationship with Klaus Kinski. Kinski is dead now, but Herzog is very much alive and active making films.

message 20: by Sherry (sethurner) (last edited Apr 07, 2009 05:25AM) (new)

Sherry (sethurner) (sthurner) Just a quick comment about the Wisconsin Film Festival we attended this weekend. While over 200 films were shown, we only managed to see six. We enjoy the annual compilation of British television ads, which can be riotously funny. I already mentioned Stroyzek, which is quite grim but does have scenes shot in America's Dairyland. We also saw a delightful documentary about origami called Between the Folds, another about architectural photographer Julius Shulman entitled Visual Acoustics, a wonderfully entertaining documentary about the national grocery bag competition called Paper or Plastic? and a Austrian film about revenge and redemption called Revanche. This last one might be worth seeking out, and might be the easiest to locate.

I enjoy this festival because of the audience, who is excited to be there and passionate about movies, and because often directors are present and will answer questions.

BTW - I did a blog entry about the documentaries we saw, with links to clips.

message 21: by madrano (new)

madrano | 444 comments Sherry, thanks for the Herzog recommendations. I must say it'll take some bribing to get DH to try him again.

FITZCARRALDO had a documentary-like section to the DVD we got from Netflix. Frankly, it was more interesting than the movie itself. They really pulled that boat over the mountain/hill. Amazing. Still, it was hard to believe those two men ever spoke to one another again...or did they? I can't recall now.

Jean, we liked MILK very much, too. It was interesting to see it (& Milk's life) portrayed in a Civil Rights light. I realized it was true but i just didn't "see" it that way until the film. Maybe because i can remember the facts so well? I'm not sure why i didn't see it that way earlier.

Well, I did see "Sunshine Cleaning" today and thought it was GREAT. I do love Amy Adams, who just light up the screen whenever she appears.

message 23: by Sherry (sethurner) (last edited Apr 07, 2009 05:24AM) (new)

Sherry (sethurner) (sthurner) Deborah, I'm sure you are sick of Herzog chit chat, but Aguirre, The Wrath of God, is better than Fitzcarraldo, IMHO. It does feature that wild man, Klaus Kinski, as a Spanish conquistador in Peru, determined to find El Dorado. I'm tempted to look at it again just to see the scenery - the Andes and the Inca trails that snake along the mountains.

That's it. No more Herzog from me.

message 24: by madrano (new)

madrano | 444 comments Sherry, i appreciate the suggestion. I have to be honest with you, we thought Stroyzek was better than Fitzcarraldo, soley because it was shorter. My issue with Herzog is that he doesn't seem to know how to edit. The animal "acts" at the end were surprising & might have left an interesting impression if we weren't forced to watch them so long. Just throw us the animals one after another & the audience will "get it." These characters aren't trained animals. Ok, having typed that out i realize that he probably had more to say & the length offered that opportunity. Still, not worth it. :-)

Bunny | 254 comments Here we are talking and talking about Herzog, and I didn't realize that he directed Rescue Dawn, the movie that started it all. I missed the titles that night I watched it.

The documentary about Fitzcarraldo is called Burden of Dreams, for those of you that like documentaries. This one is incredible. He also made another documentary that I really liked called Incident at Loch Ness. Very clever :)

message 26: by Bunny (new)

Bunny | 254 comments I watched Baz Lurmann's Romen & Juliet last night (again) - loved it again, although I still think Leo wasn't a particularly good Romeo. Claire Danes was perfect. Didn't make me cry much, unlike the Zeffrelli (sp?) version which has me in floods of tears. I remember when we first saw it - the audience was sobbing loudly by the end, including us.
I think Shakespeare would have liked Lurmann's version, too. He was pretty over the top.

I thought of a good paper I could have written once - who is Shakespeare in his plays? All authors are in their work, I think. He's not the hero nor the villain - I think he must be the sane, rational friend - Mercutio in this one, Horatio in Hamlet - Would have been an A paper in my university days :)

Yeah, somewhere along there he did a full turnaround from intriguing to wretched. I haven't seen Barfly, but for me it was Diner and The Pope of GV. After that, not so much.

Michael Canoeist (michaelcanoeist) The Soloist debuts this week, with Robert Downey playing author Steve Lopez. I won't be going, as the book was pretty good, but already the publicity has revealed that they turned Lopez from a married man and father of a young daughter to a single guy. That way he, too, is a SOLOIST just like the paranoid/schizophrenic violinist-homeless fellow who is the book's subject. And then Lopez can be shown to need help becoming more human too, GET IT? The story of this poor fellow's fall from Juilliard to the gutters of LA is touching, but, having read it, I can't imagine throwing away a couple hours watching it be crapified. Sourly, Michael

I don't know, and how could we ever tell? Somehow I doubt it, though. Although the character Foxx plays is unforgettable, the material does not sound like boffo box office, does it? As for Miley -- nothing touches her. She is amazing in that regard.

Bad review of the movie in the Times this morning - manipulation was the major flaw according to the reviewer who works with Steve Lopez.

Like you, I did not like the book at ALL, but with this comment, maybe I will see the movie. Thing is, I did not for a minute buy into the premise, so I might not like the movie either.

message 47: by madrano (new)

madrano | 444 comments I guess i liked the book more than the two of you but wasn't wowed by it, as some were.

I thought all the performances in the movie were well done. I didn't know that was Alicia Keyes until the credits but felt she held her own. I'm such a fan of Sophie Okonedo & that smile of hers!

However, my overall impression of the film was only so-so. Paul Bettany was wasted in the film, imo. But i'd say all was as i remembered the book, just not as entertaining for me. I think it's because i got more from the scene where the women joined for their religious service the first time. This was an important part of the book for me & it seemed somehow smaller in the movie.
