Sherrib What did El really say to Clara? Why is the Superintendent after Gamanche--thought they were friends...Nichol and Lemieux...what is going on? I loved the first book and this one as well but the last 20 or so pages felt forced and were confusing

Jeanie I think L said exactly what Clara heard. Within the context of the story and the other examples of people who thought they had met God, it's not a delusion but a temporary manifestation of what they need from the Divine. I would have framed it as messenger angels or even a divine spirit that temporarily used a human to deliver a message a particular human needed at the moment. If Clara had been the only one in the book ever to have such an experience we might assume she was delusional, but others spoke of similar experiences so it wasn't just Clara.

Thank you Jeanie - that was the one thing that baffled me since there was no clear answer. What you say makes perfect sense.
