The Last Unicorn is one of my all-time favorite books on mythological creatures. Her epic journey to find the rest of her kind. The people she be-friended along the way.

I watched the animated film first, then read the novel and quite satisfied with the adaptation.

Did you also know, the story of unicorns came from Ancient Greece?

If you're familiar, tell me your thoughts.

ANcient Greece?? Remind me about this one! I know of Arabic and Chinese unicorns anyway...I LOVED the film as a child and recently read the book. It was lovely too.

From my understanding, the ancient Greeks didn't think the unicorns were myths. They thought they were real, only they didn't look like Lady Amalthea in the Last Unicorn. They were smaller and had the bodies and beards of goats.

Somehow they made their way to live in India...that's from the research I found anyway. It's a great story to tell though.

I still tear up when I listen to America sing "In the Sea" (I have the album *blushes*)

Elise Edie | 2 comments I LOVE this book. I read it the first time when I was about 11 years old and I remember noticing how good the writing was--how fresh all the images were, how specific each character. Thanks for the reminder. It's time to revisit.

I'm sure that same feeling will still be there when you read it again. :)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) Yes!!! Dear me. I didn't know there was a film. Sorry, haven't introduced myself in the group, this question caught my eye. I found this Peter Beagle book gorgeously written, poignant story -- he achieved a mood I admired. Don't know that I want to try an animated film, without the way he writes (that was the big draw) but if I come across it...

The Last Unicorn

Hi Bryn and welcome! Yes it was made into an animated film. That's where I fell in love with it first. I think you would like it, the illustrations were beautifuly done and the actor's voices seemed to fit the characters quite nicely. Mia Farrow, Christopher Lee, Jeff Bridges and Alan Arkin to name a few. The author Peter Beagle even wrote the screenplay.

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) Hello Yelle, thanks for the welcome. That sounds heaps better than filmed versions can be, I might have to go look for it.

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 30 comments I didn't know it was a book, too. LOVED that movie as a child, and my son has watched it several times. I'll have to give it a try when I'm in the mood for that kind of book.

It is as much a joy to read as it is to watch.
