I wonder why the author chose to place the book in the 80s as opposed to in the future.

Good question. I think it was far more frightening by being set in the 80s than the future. It sure made it more real and terrifying for me. This story really set me on edge. I found it disturbing and continued to find it gnawing at my thoughts days and weeks after reading it.

hey, so I'm not familiar with the pop culture references in the book (music, etc), but are these real 80's references? Because I just assumed this took place in some future '80s decade, like 2080, or something. but maybe I missed something?

I am not sure if the singer and song were real or not, but they were listening to music on cassette tapes, so I believe it was the 80's in the past.
