Jess (jesmy777) Discuss the latest from one of the greatest.

Emily | 13 comments I started reading this as soon as I finished our books from last month. I kind of had an idea that this would be our August book, but I couldn't wait to start it. And JKR did not disappoint - It's so good! I would have raved about this book even if I thought it was written by Galbraith. JKR crafted a really vivid and interesting world with her characters, and of course the mystery aspect was suspenseful and intriguing.

Obviously I started reading it knowing that JKR wrote it, so her voice was obvious to me. I'm trying to imagine starting this book thinking it was really written by Galbraith. I think I would have noticed the voice seemed similar to something I had read before, but I wouldn't have pinpointed it as JKR and I never would have figured it was really her. I probably would have assumed Galbraith was a fan whose style was heavily influenced by JKR.

As for the plot, I really enjoyed trying to solve the mystery. (view spoiler)

I really really hope JKR continues the series as planned because I can't wait to read another one.

Laura | 54 comments I finished this about a week ago and really enjoyed it! The mystery is pretty standard/nothing too groundbreaking, but it's solid and the characters are really well-done, quirky and interesting. And like with HP, there are all these little details that seem unimportant that come back near the end of the book. JKR is so good with plot!

Same here! I don't think I would have picked up on it on my own, but knowing it was her, it definitely sounded like her.

(view spoiler)

I hope JKR continues it too. I really liked Strike and Robin and want to read more of their adventures!

Jess (jesmy777) Because I totally need to start another book this week...

Jess (jesmy777) I'm 20% in & loving it.

Amanda | 5 comments I liked it! I'm not a big mystery reader so I don't really have much to say for it as far as how it compared to other mysteries but I thought it was intriguing enough and a bit unexpected (or at least it was to me).

I even found some great passages that I really loved (such as that one where Cormoran was describing his favorite time of day in London, I even flipped back to it a couple of times while I was reading the book haha). There's something about reading JKR that feels like returning home and I really look forward to more.

Emy (emy0lee) | 92 comments I've been really bad at commenting on the last few book discussions.

I read this at the beginning of the month. I didn't love it, but thought it was decent and an easy, enjoyable read. Will definitely be interested in reading the rest of the series.

Never would've picked up on it being written by JKR. Also, a bit surprised that given how well-known she is for researching everything and being very specific about details, there are a lot of mistakes and inaccuracies regarding the use and care of Cormoran's prosthetic leg.

There's one description I just loved and will have to pull up from my Kindle to share.

I was curious about that. He seems to put it through a lot abuse, but then again, the only person I've ever known with prosthetics was someone with both legs gone at the knee, so it's very different.

Z (ladybellatrix) I didn't realise the book club was reading this, but just finished it by coincidence. I liked it but I thought it was kinda slow moving at some points. Obviously in retrospect it was giving you some details you'd need to know later, but it did start to drag a few places. Maybe because of the sheer length of it. Maybe it's supposed to seem so because of Robin's boredom but still.

I agree. There were some draggy parts for sure. Once he put on his "lucky suit", it seemed to move faster. One of my updates was even about this and wondering how there was 200 pages of mystery left. Luckily, I was entertained and the book's pace really picked up.

I finished this evening. I enjoyed it a lot, some of the military stuff just seemed sort of foggy. I can't think of another term for it. I just assumed there would be a little more talk about the military and the times when there was an opportunity, it was glazed over.

I just got this book from the library. I'm about thirty pages in. It's interesting.

I felt like it really picked up towards the last 1/3.

Yeah, the ending was pretty good. Ugh, but my first thought was the (view spoiler) i was so in love with cormoran and robin's relationship. and i thought she was really clever.

i thought the book was a little less sad than the casual vacancy, and overall i was happy with it!
