This is an extremely well written book. It showcases Steinbeck's outstanding visual imagery and characterization. Even though the subject matter is very serious and not easy to digest, it is inspiring that someone can place so much emotion into such a short book. The reader cannot help connecting to the main characters, Lennie and George, on their journey throughout life's struggles.

This is definitely a thought provoking book that everyone should consider reading. I don't know how I was able to get through high school without reading it!

One of my favourite bits of this book is the description at the beginning. It just shows the place perfectly.

I'm always shy of picking up a classic (don't know why that is though). I'm glad I decided to read this one, although I wish I had discovered it earlier. I simply love the relationship between George and Lennie and I just couldn't help loving the end. Definitely one of the best books I've read.

I agree with you Sanz. George and Lennie's relationship is what defines family? We are all looking for that place that we can call home and be accepted for who we are; a place where we can live off the fat of the land as George might say. John Steinbeck was a master craftsman with description and dialogue, and in this story an incredible amount of symbolism as well as each horseshoe clang calls out for whom the bell tolls, and as we all know, it tolls for thee. Just one of many symbolic allusions. Fun fact: John Steinbeck wrote this story originally to be a play. The first manuscript his new puppy Tobby ate. Steinbeck had to start completely over, and that was before our great computers. Another fun fact, yet more daunting - for fun, look up the true account of what Steinbeck based his character Lennie on. If you don't know, the information might shock you. As Steinbeck said in East of Eden (paraphrased-beauty lies on a foundation of ugliness). Sorry for the long post, but I truly love Steinbeck.

Even if you are not a Steinbeck fan, and more so if you are I recommend his short story "The Pearl" (96 pages).

The story reminds me of 2 things: Some of the best advice my grandmother gave me; and the beginning of the Talking Head's song "Burning Down the House" - WATCH OUT, YOU MIGHT GET WHAT YOUR AFTER.

The book a quick read and it encourages the reader to evaluate what is most valuable in their life.

I`ve always liked THE SNAKE. The narrator is a Rickert`s alike.
