The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien in 9 hours and 55 minutes

Kai Coates (southernbohemian) | 22 comments Alannah, you're crazy fast! I only read 485 words per minute.

message 4: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I read 219 words per minute which they say on the staples reading test makes me 12% slower than the national average. I just read at my own pace and it takes me a few days to several weeks to get through a book and I read an hour before I go to bed at night anyway.

I think it's nice to really slow down and enjoy the book. I think I've gotten into a bad habit where I kind of feel like I'm rushing with whatever I'm reading.

message 6: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Plus when I read, it is like I am watching a movie and the people who I imagine the characters to be come to life within the characters and I can hear their voices in my head.

I would do that too then I get really disappointed if the book does end up into a movie and none of the characters are like what I imagine them to be.

message 8: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments 406 words per minute, but then I only got 2 out of the three questions right!

message 9: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 266 comments I got 571, but I have to admit sometimes I read without really absorbing anything. If something really grabs me then I'll take my time.

You read 276 words per minute.
That makes you 10% faster than the national average.

And I got the three questions right! And I'm not mothertongue!!!

message 11: by Elisa (new)

Elisa | 206 comments 513 words per minute, 2 correct answers.
As for Laura, not being a mothertongue English I am quite happy!

message 12: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments You read 240 words per minute.
That makes you 4% slower than the national average.

It doesn't matter, I like to read slowly and to enjoy every single word above all in books that have a wonderful prose or deep concepts.

Me too, the three questions right and my native language is Italian :D

message 13: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments 380 per minute, 3 correct answers, not mothertongue either. I was surprised to see that this is still 52 percent faster than national average, because eventhough I'd consider myself a fast reader in German I kind of thought I was quite slow in English.

message 14: by Book3 (new)

Book3 | 2 comments 420 word per minute 68% faster than the national average ! And im just a teen !

message 15: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3303 comments I read at 293 words per minute (17% faster than the national average). I got all 3 questions correct.

message 16: by Charbel (new)

Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments I read 322 words per minute which is 29% faster than the national average, and I got all 3 questions right. I think that's a good balance.

message 17: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I read 589 words per minute, 3 correct answers. But I found that test made me nervous so am not sure that is how fast I really read!

message 18: by Tweedledum (new)

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2163 comments 1 read 722 words per minute! But it was the start of Alice in Wonderland a book I know very well! If I can allegedly , with this reading speed , read War and Peace in a few hours how come I am still reading it after 36 or more years! It's a bit like sprinting v marathon. . I can certainly read quickly for short bursts and have to skim read a lot for my job but the acid test comes over sustaining interest in a lengthy book. My dyslexic daughter who reads very little and very slowly ( she had a kindle for Christmas by the way and is thrilled with the way it is transforming her reading stamina) nevertheless recalls everything in great detail.

I'm impressed Jenny. If I were to read anything in another language, and I do occasionally tackle a few chapters of something in French......it would probably be about 100 words a minute at best.

message 20: by Tweedledum (new)

551 words per minute. I think this would be about right... It felt quite leisurely.

Tweedledum, hand me some Dickens and I'll be reading at 50 words per minute! ;) I think it also very much depends on the kind of text I am tackeling.

Not to be questioned!

message 27: by Noel (new)

Noel (noel-brady) Mehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I'm not sure how I feel about this sort of thing, because I feel like people equate superiority with reading speed, and I don't believe in that. I can read extremely fast when I choose to, but I don't choose to, because I would prefer to savor the words and read them the way a person would naturally speak. Because it's a *story*, not a race. What do you all think?

That was not my intention when I posted this thread. I just thought some people would like to know what their speed is. But I do agree with you, books should be enjoyed not rushed through.

message 29: by Diane S (new)

Diane S ☔ 854 for me. All questions correct. And I agree that it depends on the book.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

I sometimes wish I could read faster, I scored about 400 a minute with 3 questions correct. If I could read faster I could read more books in the short amount of time I have to read!

For me it definitely depends on the book/author/style. If I hate a book it will also take much longer

That wouldn't be ME or CFS as I would call it, would it? You don't need to answer if you don't want to but my granny is the same way. I have ME but luckily it's not bad, I just get ill if I'm on the go for about ten hours or more without a proper rest break.

message 32: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Muller | 46 comments I read about as fast as I speak which is about 120. Slowest on the thread. Am dyslexic. I think I would have been better off before the printed word. Language is for me still mostly an oral phenomenon - I have to (at least mentally) translate the written word to oral before I can understand it.

message 33: by Summerdale (new)

Summerdale This may sound strange but for me, a traditional book reader (IDK how it is with ereaders) a lot depends on the size and font of the print.

Noel (noel-brady) Timothy wrote: "I read about as fast as I speak which is about 120. Slowest on the thread."

I like to read as fast as I speak too - you're not alone. :) I like having that rhythm, and it immerses me more in the story and the experience.

Nice to see that I've improved.

You read 1,001 words per minute.
That makes you 300% faster than the national average.

message 36: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Apparently, I read 238 words per minute, which makes me 5% slower than the national average. But I read more slowly on a PC, I guess I would have been faster on a paper book or an actual Kindle. (English is not my mother tongue, though - I think I read faster in Italian).

message 37: by Alannah (new)

Alannah Clarke (alannahclarke) | 14425 comments Mod
I think that's really good, especially if Italian is not your mother tongue, I have been trying to teach myself French and I know my reading speed is so much slower as I'm translating in head.

message 38: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Alannah, I think I would read, like, 50 words per minute in French... and I lived in a French-speaking country for a couple of years! :D

message 39: by Robin (new)

Robin A 206 at 18% and I think it said slower
