The Goal:

To use ALL letters / words (green squares) / numbers (purple squares) / punctuation (red square) to spell out whole title of 1 (one) book which you will have to finish reading to complete this challenge.

This is your GOAL TITLE

Series name / Subtitle are optional
Please note if you choose to use series name / subtitle in reading your letters - you must include these for your Goal Title too.

Official Game Time:

NOW to New Year's Day (Midnight of 1 January 2013)

The Basics:

description

Roll 2 die
The one on the left is your column and the one on the right is your row. So, if you roll 3 / 2, the letter you got is "E"

Read book with any word in title beginning with letter (as per your roll)
Exception is made for: Q, X, & Z where it can be any word which contained that letter
Words exclude: A, An, The

Each letter requires a unique book (ie. You cannot use one book for more than 1 letter). You may cross over with other reading challenges.

IF you land on any of the green / purple / red squares, you do not have to read any books. These are Free Squares for you to use to complete your goal:
* green squares are bonus words for you to spell your Goal Title which you may also use as part of a bigger word, eg. "for" in "forever", "and" in "candid" etc
*red square is to cover any sort of punctuation which you may need to spell your Goal Title
*purple squares are for those books with numbers in title - you can use these squares to "spell" your Goal Title (that is, if title use “one rather than 1, you can still use the 1-3 purple square to spell this title out). Note: you can also use it to spell out first, second, third, etc

If you landed on a square once, you can only use that letter once (that is, if you've only landed on the letter N once then you can only use it once but if you've landed on R twice, you have to use it twice)

Examples:

1. Landed on E, L, V, 1-3, L, E
You need to read 5 books with word in title beginning with above letters; eg,
The Esential Leunig
Lexicon
Velocity
Lolita
A Teaspoon of Earth and Sea
Goal Title = Level 2

2. Landed on W, P, I, Punctuation, S, I, R, T, “THE, A, H, E, S
You need to read 11 books with word in title beginning with above letters; eg,
Wolves of the Calla
The Professor
Forged in Dreams and Magick
The Weight of Souls
The Idigo Spells
The Rainbow Troops
The First Third
All Our Yesterdays
The Mystery of a Hansom Cab
A Case of Exploding Mangoes
Secrets of Catalpa Hall
Goal Title = The Pirate's Wish

You will need to Un-Scramble your letters to form your Goal Title BUT you MUST use ALL letters

Your Game Plans:
Please create your own planning thread (under this folder) which will make it easy for me to check later on. Please include your GR handle first so I can find your thread easily.

Market Place:
I realise that it will be difficult to use ALL your letters so go to Market Place to get rid of letters you don’t want and get ones you do need.

The Prizes:

Because it's our 5th Birthday; I decided to splurge a bit and spoil you guys for being so Awesome!

THE Prize: a paperback / digital copy of The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

Your choice of either pb / ebook (it will also depend on your location but I'd be ordering to The Book Depository / Kobo)

Why this book? It's one of the first books I read for our first shelf in October 2008 (Mystery)

This is the prize for having completed the goal with the most letters* in title so a bit of luck and ingenuity required

*I will be counting the number of squares you've landed on but it sounds better when I say, "most letters in title".

To be eligible for this prize, books read must be 200 pages or more. I will look at the number of pages listed on the most popular edition of the book on GR (ie. the book on top of the ‘Other Edition list). In relation to digital editions only book with no specified page numbers:
1. Minimum of 70,000 word count; and
2. Let me know early by posting here of your book and sources of your data for (1) above; and
3. post your data again in your planning thread.

Please ensure that I can access your shelves to check your reads, if your setting is on private, send me a friend-vite (promise, I don’t spam)

Random awards: 2 handmade bookmarks

These bookmarks are lovingly hand-crafted by yours truly (see examples here)

I will randomly draw 2 winners out of those who completed this challenge.

Please note: if you have won the book prize, you are not eligible for the bookmarks.

It's turning out to be a bigger challenge than the one I foreseen so I'm opening this all the way to the end of New Year's Day (midnight 1 January 2013).

You'll want to complete it by this date to kick off for a Big 2014 :D

Coralie | 1658 comments Let me see if I have this correctly.

I have an 8 letter title I am aiming for. I have rolled 8 times and have 5 letters I want to use, 2 letters I don't want and a purple that I don't want. The letters that I don't want I can swap with someone who has those that I do need but I can't swap the purple number.

As as alternative, keeping the same book I could include the series name (which would nicely use my purple number) and roll a whole lot more (and read a whole lot more) to achieve all those extra required letters.

Is that about right?

message 6: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9030 comments Mod
That is about right, Coralie, but you're forgetting The Broker. you can try trading in if you can catch the right trading times :)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9030 comments Mod
Coralie, would you mind please moving your game plan to your own thread? I've just created mine as an example...

Also, if you wish to put up some of your letters for a swap, list them in the Market Place (swap).

Thanks :)

message 9: by Tien (new)

No, green tiles are bonus words (no reading required)

Tara, would you mind creating your own thread for your game plan, please? Thanks!

Tara | 742 comments Yep. Just about to do that.

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments So I pick any book as my goal title?

message 13: by Amy (new)

Amy | 2234 comments If we land on the green squares, can their contents be used as part of a larger word (like "for" as part of forever)?

message 14: by Tien (new)

yes to Tara & Dee

good catch, Amy... I would allow that and will amend the rules when I'm on pc :)

message 18: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments could we propose a word count for ebooks only (like 350 wpp as a basis) - so like 70k words minimum to count?

Thanks for the reminder, Susan :)

Dee wrote: "could we propose a word count for ebooks only (like 350 wpp as a basis) - so like 70k words minimum to count?"

Sorry, Dee, I'm trying to make it really easy for myself this time especially since it's coming up to the busy season (hubby's birthday, our anniversary, my son's bday, then Christmas all coming up one after the other-I won't have much time to check things out)

D.G. wrote: "Question about the rolling of the dice...if you're book has 10 letters in the title, I guess you have to roll 10 times?"

I guess so, unless, of course, if you got any of the bonus words etc...

message 21: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments I'll volunteer to check them ;) (I have ulterior motives - lots of ARC's that are ebooks only)

message 22: by Amy (new)

Amy | 2234 comments I think it is better to save a roll or two. I did all of my rolling yesterday and just realized that I could have used "in" in the middle of one of my title words. I can't now because that will leave me with an unused letter :-(

What happens if you don't have use for the bonus words or numbers? Meaning, the title of my book is Magic Bites so none of the bonus words or numbers would apply...what happens if I get one? Is that something I could trade with the Broker for a letter I need?

Aww - the green squares are feeling really unwanted right now :(

You'll just have to watch on the specials available through the broker - it may require patience but it will definitely require speed ;p

I don't like saying "No" but I also don't like excluding books... any books... SO:

ebooks are allowed on following conditions:
1. as Dee suggested min. 70K words
2. that you give me heads up early by posting your book here with links to wherever you found the data for (1) above (so I can have a look when I have a chance during the game rather than just at the end)
3. post same data in your planning thread so I don't have to go looking for it again.

I'll amend above rules now...

I counted wrong and rolled too few times...YAY. I can use "IN" after all.

Oh, no! I misunderstood about the green squares. Don't know how I could have -- it seems very clear when I read it over now.

But that means I've rolled too many times for the goal book I chose. I kept getting green squares and ignoring them as freebies. And I stopped rolling when I saw an idea for a title I could read.

So now ... what do I do ... do I have get rid of this title, and find a book with 7 letters and 3 words? Or will the broker sometimes offer the opportunity to just donate an extra word we need to get rid of?

So, if I need two greens ("the" x2) but only have one green ("for") to swap, I am out of luck? Then what do I do - spell out "the"?

I have a feeling you may be able to trade for your "THE" with the Broker. That hasn't come into play yet, so I'm sure Tien will tell us more in the coming days.

There will be lots of opportunities with the Broker if you catch it at the right time. So just watch this space and don't stress out too much now ;)

I know, you just can't help it- all of you being planners, ha ha ha

message 35: by Bea (new)

Bea | 5276 comments Mod
I have written off The Broker as a method of getting what I need due to the "if you catch it at the right time" and "first come first serve" ideas associated with it.

I work full time and have limited time spans when I am on the computer. That makes me think The Broker is not a source that will be available to me.

So...if I do not succeed in getting it from The Broker...STRESS!

message 36: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1218 comments Another issue with The Broker is time zones. We are all over the world and people are not online at the same times. Perhaps The Broker can be up for 24 hours so that everyone will have an opportunity to use it? You can still have the first come, first served rule.

But I don't think this answers my question about whether I should pick a different book, since I rolled too many times. Or will the broker offer an opportunity to get rid of extra (word) tiles without taking more?

Errr, yea... that's NOT happening, ha ha ha

Don't worry too much, you guys... there will definitely be lots of flexibility with timing & "prices" at each trading session ;p

In any case, I've got 2 other time zones on my phone and it's telling me, 5pm in LA & 8pm in NY right now so... that's good approximation for most of you, right?

am keeping it close to my chest, aren't I?

Just so you know, the first trading session is coming up sometime next 24-48 hours ;)

Dee wrote: "ok, i have another question, on the Broker - you said so you could trade up to 2 letters, but 4 squares...how does that work?"

There is a limit of 'buying' 2 letters but this session because it's special, each letter is worth 2 squares so you can 'trade in' a maximum of 4 squares for the limit of getting 2 letters from broker.

Hope that's clearer. Sorry, I'm late... been away for the weekend with no reception whatsoever.
