Bargle | 1744 comments Female songwriter gets big break and becomes successful and well known. Ex of some sort wants to kill her. I think he had killed his brother and faked it as his own death or something similar.

A few of the scenes in the book:

She is auditioning for an A&R guy or something similar. She sings a very personal song for him. He starts critizing something technical in the writing and she gets angry and leaves. After going on a long walk, she returns to her apartment and finds a huge bouquet of flowers from the A&R guy as an apology.

After being hired as a songwriter, she is thrilled to learn Crystal Gayle is going to record one of her songs.

A rock group that has had hits with her songs brings her out onstage at one of their shows.

The A&R guy thinks she doesn't have a great voice. He says something like, "Who knew Bob Dylan's voice would touch people, but it did."

I read it 10+ years ago.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5085 comments Bargle, you mentioned mystery in the post title? What was the mystery that needed to be solved? Or, was it more suspense due to the killer ex boyfriend?

Do you remember anything about the cover?

message 3: by Bargle (new) - added it

Bargle | 1744 comments It was to do with the ex-boyfriend. I think he was trying to kill her or terrorize her or something. I don't remember anything about the cover.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5085 comments I Still Miss My Man But My Aim Is Getting Better I Still Miss My Man But My Aim Is Getting Better by Sarah Shankman I don't think this is it; this book is more humorous.

Do you remember any other characters?

message 5: by Bargle (new) - added it

Bargle | 1744 comments No, that's not it, but I've loved that title ever since I first saw it.

No, I don't remember any other characters, except I think there was a private detective involved, but I'm not even sure about that.

The bits with the A&R guy happen in NYC.

Bargle | 1744 comments Moving this back up with a bit more info.

I think the ex had faked his own death by killing his brother so as to get inheritance.

I may have that wrong.

Juels | 3273 comments Maybe Hide and Seek by James Patterson?

"Who could have imagined Bob Dylan's voice capturing an audience's heart - until it did?"

Bargle | 1744 comments That's it! "Hide and Seek"

Thanks, Juels.

SparksofEmber | 957 comments I saw that one in my searches but didn't think it matched enough to mention. Lesson learned - always share just in case!

Congrats on finding it!

Thanks, I've learned the same thing as well on the forgotten movie board I go to. It's always worth mentioning if it is close. Memories, including mine, do get errors creeping in.

Forgotten movie board? Sounds like fun. I'd love to know the website.

Bargle | 1744 comments It's the "I Need To Know" board at the IMDb.

I don't know what signing up requires these days. I've been a member for 14 years, but the requirements have changed since then.
