I'm moving it up the list. All i needed was little nudge. Thanks.

Thanks, jaxnsmom! That's exactly how I looked at it too. I really was excited to knock 4 off the tbr pile and since I add to that pile every day, I'm glad for challenges like this.

That's cutting it pretty close, but you made it! And look at your points - really well done.

Jess :) | 248 comments thanks jaxnsmom!! I really loved Middlemarch -- it's now one of my all-time favs! I had this on my TBR for such a long time. I'm so glad that this challenge prompted me to give it a go :)

you've ripped yourself off 3 points for Infidel. Check out Thing Two's post. But guessing you both scored the version you read with the pages?

Yeah, the longest version in English listed is in under 400 pages. I did the audio version.

message 63: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19166 comments No worries Thing Two. Sorry she didn't write one more page.

Guessing Alexandra read it in another language then. These clever multilingual people get more options!

Thanks, Rusalka. I missed the bonus points (for the main character being a writer) but somehow the version I read (in German) had more pages, just checked again to be sure.
I don´t think it has anything to do with clever multilingual people but rather with the problem that the Germans take longer to get to the point :-)

message 65: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 542 comments Checked it again, I think they counted the acknowledgements etc. also as pages so I´ll just use the same scoring as Thing Two.

message 66: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19166 comments Haha I won't say that at work tomorrow. There are some really long words in German though. It's all very logical, but I can see how you would have more pages in a translation.

Lexx's favourite German word is "schutzengrabenvernichtungsautomobile". For us non-German speakers, it's the original word for a tank. Kind proves both of our points heh.

Oh dear, that is funny. I´ve never heard that before, though. We also call them "Panzer". Put that just proves the point, we will always find a more complicated word :-).

message 68: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15867 comments This reminds me of that youtube-clip in which German words are compared to words for the same thing in several other languages. So funny!

But I do like that Germans often seem to have one word for something that we need to describe in more words :)

Oh, who did the narration? I love the stories. It might be fun to hear them read.

Which one do you mean, Cherie?

message 71: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Alexandra,
I think I was trying to ask about the audio version for Out of Africa from message 62 above.

Thing Two,
Did you listen to this in audio? If yes, I was wondering who did the narration. If you meant that you used the page numbers from the audio version - never mind and sorry for getting the thread off track.

message 72: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 542 comments Oh, I think this was some kind of misunderstanding. I did not listen to the audio version but read the book. Though I think it is a great story to listen to. Did you listen to the audio book?

message 73: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments No I read it too. I would listen to it though, if it were well done. I love the movie! Wouldn't it be wonderful if Meryl Streep narrated it?

I´m sure it would! I actually haven´t seen the movie yet but I can imagine how perfectly well Meryl Streep fits into this role...
